Looking at German Short Haired puppies for sale. Some say that they are docked and de-clawed. What does declawed mean really? Never really heard of it.... Why would it be done?

I imagine they mean dew clawed, puppies are sometimes born with back dew claws, and they are usually removed (not sure of current legislation though). As they are gundogs its possible they remove front dew claws too but will leave it to others with experience of the breed to answer that.

I've never had a pedigree dog ( always had crossbreeds or mongrels ) . One dog we had tore off her dew claw - needed an operation to remove the other one - very expensive ! Very painful for the dog too .

Other dogs have had no trouble with their dew claws , but current dog has to have them trimmed regularly - dew claws can be a right nuisance !

My samoyeds have always been declawed, unsure whether it is a nesessary (sp) evil or not.

I've helped out when my friend had her puppies done.
Its carried out within the first 24-48 hours after birth, something to do with a nerve that doesn't connect until after that time (or something like that).

The puppies yelped for a second, and then were fine. It only took a sec and there were no after effects at all.

Not sure if thats any help.
