hello,

My horse has recently been de nerved. (I know alot of people dont like this-last option!) because of a cyst in the pedal bone. Im looking for people out there that have horses also that have been de nerved and there experiences with there horses after the de nerving. My seems great at mo (I know he cant feel his foot thats why!) but would be great to hear from people if they are still competing esp any1 eventing...thinking I should only stick to dressage?

thanks

I have a few posts on this at the moment.

My horse just had an ultrasound scan this morning to confirm PSD in his right hind, chronic apparently.

I do not want to do operation and not going to bother with shock wave as only 40% success rate so not worth it in my opinion. I’m currently considering equidronate (tildren) or cortisone jabs. Probably going to do equidronate I think.

My vet told me LOADS of very high level horses have had the nerve op done and whether or not people think that is right is another thing. I mean, I am not going for surgery PURELY because my horse (Spanish) is a VERY sensitive type who would be very upset by the whole process. I mean after his nerve blocking he was petrified for a week of me picking his feet out!! So I want to look at other options for him. But that is purely because of him.

Some people will say you shouldn’t jump and just stick to dressage. But all I wanted to say is that there are a lot of horses (many not disclosed for having it done!) competing internationally apparently. I know that the op is banned under FEI rules......the only thing is how do people know! a horse at my yard had it done last year and you can not see anything in the way of a scar!

Not been very helpful but I think you have to do what is best for the horse. If he would be miserable not jumping, then do a little bit maybe! (my horse of course is NOT a jumper haha!!).

totally agree with the above. One we have has been denerved (PSD in both hind legs). The vet also told us that there were a lot of top event horses at 4* that have been done and the ground jury turn a blind eye to it.
Different from feet being denerved though as thats the 'landing gear'

Spanish Neddy - so sorry to hear of your PRE's diagnosis. I saw your pictures on your profile. He does look a sweetie. As an Iberian owner (PRE and Luso X) I hope all goes well for the both of you. Let us know how you progress

Hi Herts05
Thanks he is a sweetie. It has been one big rollercoster of a ride with him! from transporting him to the UK, to castration, to tooth problem, to backing him to him bolting when ridden to this leg issue (plus more I have probably just forgotten right now lol!). All very emotional :( :(

He has only been ridden few months (as late starter was backed in dec!) so how he got ligament damage is beyond me! he has only been in schooling for a few months :( I have put it down to his high action, otherwise it doesnt make sense!

They're a lovely breed arent they? I will never go back again! he is so sweet and cuddly. very genuine too. Although VERY sensitive!! such a 1-2-1 horse arent they! He can be a monkey for other people (like not letting them catch him to bring him in hehe!).

Spanish Neddy. Sounds like you have had an eventful time.
PM me if you want to as it would be good to share experiences. I've had my boy for 3 years now so can "talk" to you about people I've found to be of particular help

Friends horse had it done but it didn't work in her horses case, I believe the nerve regenerated?????

Anyway her horse had pedal ositis

Hi Vicky1234, yes the nerves will regeneate in time, I have known and owned horses which have been de-nerved which have jumped/hunted and evented no bother, your horse will soon let you know what he/she is happy with.

thank you to everyone for your advice..helpful!...kirstykate with the 1s uve had de nerved how long have they lasted between did or would you ever get them de nerved again? I think it is to much to put my horse under again? Some people say its dangerous to jump but i dont think so?
