Hi,

I'm trying to help out an older lady in my street. She has three dogs who have been passing worms. She can't afford to take them to the vet for the de-wormer, and won't accept 'charity' if you try to give her anything.

Do the likes of this or this actually work?

My dogs get de-wormer from the vet, so I'm not sure if they'd just be wasting her money. If not, what else do you suggest? She's not eligible to use the PDSA.

Thanks!

Why don't you offer to get her some decent wormers from one of the online pet pharmacies, Drontal tablets are only around £1.60 from them, in fact the tablets are less than £3 each from my vet which is still cheaper than those supermarket ones, has she actually asked her vet how much wormers would be? I think its unlikely the vet would need to see the dogs to prescribe wormers so shouldn't cost her too much.

As far as I've heard they don't work and I'm sure I recall the Bob Martin products being implicated in the illness and death of cats, if not dogs.

A lot of pharmacies, especially those in supermarkets, sell Drontal tablets - don't tell her you bought them, just that they're spares from your own dogs?

Advocate spot-on does fleas and worms all in one go but needs to be bought from a vet.

Bob Martin has been linked with fitting. Keep well clear.

I can buy Drontal tablets at 1.60 each and both my local agricultural store, and online.

Thanks! I've been trying to think that that name all afternoon! Where do you buy them online?

It's a tricky situation because she's a very proud lady, and she gets offended if she thinks you're trying to make her into a charity case (her words).

If I can find something that she can afford and order them for her, then it keeps her happy and the dogs get sorted too.

Where's the best place to buy it online, and do I need a prescription for it? (like I said, I buy mine direct from the vet.)
