A friend of mine was hacking this week and saw a dead pony in a field.
The pony was a grey roan colt. There is another pony in the field looking rather unwell too.
She contacted RSPCA, DEFRA, ILPH (World horse welfare) & BHS all without any success.
Answerphone messages just get ignored.

I have suggested contacting the local Council and the police but would like to know if anyone else has any suggestions...?

The area is Dindor, Hereford.

:(

Environmental Health are the people who will take most notice of dead livestock. It is actually illegal to leave carcasses to rot, so they will find out who the land/owner is.

Just had text saying that because of the smell, it is suspected that there may be more bodies...... too awful to imagine.

Why don't the authorities respond?

Its just awful that this can happen in what is supposed to be a civilised country ......

The area is ... Ridge Hill, Dindor.

Because unfortunately 'the authorities' haven't yet been notified. The only authority who has responsibility for this is the Environmental Health dept of your local council. The charities have more than enough to do, dealing with live animals (and yes I do realise that there is another, live, pony in the field).

I live over 120 miles away from where this is going on.

It is so frustrating not being able to just go and get the remaining live pony out of there.

Thats terrible,
Yes i agree go to police, and enviroemntal health.
if no one cares about the living pony cant you just take it?

Im not saying stealing is right but this pony neds help, the owner cant be found so i thing its the right situation to take it.

Environmental Health probaly wouldnt be able to help unless a nuisance was being caused. What they might be able to do is fast track the issue to the appropriate authority. In this case fallen stock would be Trading Standards Animal Health - this would be based at the County Council (unless it is a unitary authority). If there is a live horse thats looking poor in the field I am amazed WHW or RSPCA havent become invloved. Mind you, just becasue no one has returned a call doesnt neccesarily mean nothing is/has been done.

Keep us updated

So have you told your friend to phone enviramently health oe trading standereds?
I agree because of a bank ho;iday it maytake some time, but there must be someone on call!
As another poster said, it is ilegle to leave a dead animal out to rot!

Yes, I have advised EH , Council and Police to be contacted. The reply was that they have ben contacted and no-one wants to know ....

ring Trading Standards at Hereford Council. Otherwise try Equine Market Watch in Bromyard, Herefordshire or Society for the Welfare of Horses & POnies in Monmouth (SWHP are excellent and have ponies on loan in Herefordshire so they definitely cover the area.
