Can you guys show me some pics of the above please :o Just got my mare a dead sheep and she impressed with it being right next to her to body so I want to put a thin saddlecloth underneath but it just doesn't look right to me :o

Dead sheep and thin saddlecloth :)

What is this fixation with dead sheep underneath the saddle? Is it really beneficial or is it just a fashion statement? Call me old fashioned, but I have always been taught that if you have a saddle which fits your horse, a numnah is unnecessary.

I get my saddles fitted with the pads I'm going to use, so they do fit properly. I like the extra padding as I jump a lot and its just personal preference.

However I do know people who just shove them under there when the saddle has been fitted straight on to the horse's back. Not something I would do.

I think people just think it is nice for the horse to have something soft and fluffy under their saddle?

I must admit I like the way it looks :o although I haven't ever owned one; always tried to stick with a thin numnah, but quite often have had to ride in a non-slip pad!

I do hope the fashion passes.. it looks ridiculous. Like some Kurgistani sheep-herder up in the Andes or something. Plus if you have a horse who isn't working well under saddle, it shows up like a beacon.

OP - if your horse doesn't like it I'd suggest getting a saddle fitter to have a quick check before adding something extra again.

I know a couple who've visited horses I've shared will recommend what to use with a non-ideal-fitting saddle (e.g. temporary measure when horse changing shape/other saddle being re-flocked/etc)

If horse is happy without stay that way (or get new saddle fitted/existing one adjuted to go with the dead sheep if you really like it!).

If horse isn't happy without you probs need saddler out.

Happy shopping!

Just to add i dont just stick a sheepskin under my saddle willy nilly!! They were both fitted with it :) Coloured doesnt wear one anymore as shes filled out alot since then ... but i do think it looks nice :o

As stated above its the sheepskin she is objecting to not the fit of the saddle she also reacted to the sheepskin girth sleeve that has been used in the past! I am currently awaiting my saddler arranging a date to visit but I have discussed the use of pads with her and the saddle being a touch wide at the moment and it was her suggestion to put a pad on. It is honestly not a fashion statement.

Who cares if its a fashion statement though? As long as your horse is comfortable why does anyone need to justify it?

My horses don't NEED to wear it, but I prefer it, I like the extra padding, and I think it looks nice and smart.

I bought a proper sheepskin saddle cloth for when my mare is working hard (hunting etc) as I was told the sheepskin soaks up the sweat better than anything else....

My horse has poor topline from no work with previous owners, saddle fitter reccomended cottage craft spinless channel sheep skin half pad until he builds up topline.

He's very happy to be ridden now...
