Hey All, I have been back to Battersea today and have fallen in love with a deaf dalmatian puppy. I already have a 2 1/2yr old hound X english setter. I am willing to put in lots and lots of training. I was just wondering if anyone had a deaf dog and could help me with some advice.

I have no practical advice to offer I'm afraid but just wanted to say good for you for not just picking a perfect dog. I'm sure all the effort you put in will be rewarded tewn fold by a lovely dog.

Thanks - I am totally in love!! Just baby steps at the moment. Back to Battersea tomorrow to see him. Fingers crossed it all works out!! x

hi-my parents have always taken in rescue dalmatians-they have had 2 deaf ones!! they have a 9 year old deaf bitch at he mo who they have had since 6 months-the owners shut her in the shed when they found out she was deaf!! with both of the deaf ones we have never been able to let off of lead in non enclosed spaces so have always walked them on long lines-or let off in my totally enclosed paddock-even then tho they can become disorientated very quickly!! we always have one companion dalmatian-currently charlie ,2 years and train them to go and get other dog when in house. the hardest thing to get used to is that when you come in they dont come rushing to greet you as obviously they dont know your home!!
also remember dalmatians are very boisterous dogs but very loving!! if you want any more info feel free to pm and if you decide to re-home i need to see the pics!!

Hi Please let me know how it goes, I cannot help regarding deafness but I do have a dalmation who is the most loveable dog I have ever had... I really would not be without him....we never let him off the lead except in our fields as he does run off.... and he loves to pinch food. He is fantastic with children and loves the horses....if i could I would have another tomorrow.

Hi
I have a deaf border collie, who I also rescued from Battersea. He is an amazing dog and most people would never know he is deaf. With a lot of hard work and training they are the same as any other dog.
My boy comes to the yard and goes off lead, his recall is better than many others in the local park. The most important thing is to build a strong leadership bond with the dog. I use hand singles to recall (a wave sign brings him back). Raising your hand palm up for sit, thumbs up sign is good boy and so on. Mine competes in obedience, fly ball and agility. It really can be done and after his horrific start in life (he was used as a punch bag, then locked in a cupboard under the sink and never saw daylight until 10 months old).
Find a good dog trainer, and go to classes. It was a year on long lines before I let him off, and he is toy crazy which helps with trainig. I also went to a trainer for a day who specilizes with deaf dogs and he charged £30 never looked back after that. PM me if you would like any further details, best of luck and what a lucky dog.
