I thought a few months ago my budget of 4K to buy a 5/6 year old 16hh+ gelding with a bit of comp experience under its belt but still potential to be high level RC allrounder was quite realistic. Now after a few months of looking i am not so sure! All private ones seem to be 5K plus, so thought i would go down the dealer route but majority of them are asking 6K plus  or POA - which to me means 'if you have to ask you can not afford' they are all rather green as well !! Can anybody recommend any realistically priced dealers?
I am just worried that if i can not find something i want at the money I have now in the middle of winter, i have no hope as it gets closer to spring :(
I know the right one is out there at the right price, just getting a little impatient i guess... ho hum

That budget should be right for what you're looking for. At 5/6yo they
may only have limited low level comp experience and may still be a bit green but otherwise that should get you a good un.

Whereabouts are you? Or where are you prepared to travel to? I could recommend 1/2 but they would be in the SE area.

When I was looking (a couple of years ago now!) I found a couple of dealers were really cheap, but most were really expensive, didn't seem to be anything reasonably priced. I approached them with what I was looking for, and gave my budget of £3500. They told me I would need £4500 + to find what I wanted. I got my perfect horse, ticked every box, for £1500 inc tack. Goes to show that if you look around, you can get horses for reasonable prices (or in my case, cheaply, and there haven't been any hidden negatives!) Keep looking, took me over 6 months to find my boy.

Is there anything in your list of 'wants' that you can negotiate on?

Does the horse have to be a gelding? Does it have to be 5 or 6? Maybe an older horse would be worth considering if you are finding the younger ones too green?

BernsterBaubles - I am in the SE area. So any you can recommend would be good. I have already been to the more well known ones though. PM me if you prefer with any recommendations. If i think the horse is worth travelling for i will go furthur out. Thanks

Meowy Catmas - The only things that have to stick are that its 16hh+ / has to be a gelding / 7 years or under / under 4K.

I sure i will find what i am looking for soon. Just got to keep searching :)

I already have a Gelding so would just be easier alround to have the same. Same fields etc... Lots of livery yards don't allow Mares and Geldings together :(

That's true, both the yards I've been at in the past were like that. I've just had mares for years and now have a yearling gelding too (the flaxen chestnut in my sig) but despite my worries, they all get along fine. *Phew* ;)

Guildford area - search in Google for Charly Clothier horses - she has a good eye for a horse with a good temperament and for talent, she has incredibly good connections for Irish Sports Horses, and she specialises in competition horses, and she has great prices. She's a friend of mine, and I can vouch for her trustworthiness. She's got a couple in at the moment that might fit the bill. I don't think she advertises, I think most of her customers are word of mouth, repeat customers, which says a lot. Give her a ring though, she may not have everything on her website. I know she sometimes drives up north, and has the pick & choice of quite a few horses, and she always comes back with some real stars, at fab prices - within your budget.

Ditto your experience, I'm looking for something very similar to you and also having no luck in finding one. Been round all of the well known yards and ventured out of the south east into the West Mids too but still nothing suitable.

Its really hard when you believe your budget should be enough and everybody tells you the same but the reality of what you're viewing consistently falls below expectations.

Ah well back to browsing the ads - good luck on your search I'm sure the right one is out there somewhere ... I'll be racing you to view it :D!
