Hi all,

Super pleased as I found a lovely off road hacking route right on my doorstep today! :D

However, i noticed deer up ahead as I was turning back. Just wondered how you all deal with deer when out hacking alone?

Horse ignores them- and I make sure I slow down and walk past them at a respectable distance, so as not to spook them

They always leap out in front of me and horse does a ballerina act. I talk or sing when getting near their haunts so they have time to leap out before I am right next to them!

Ha - I met some on Friday, the closest I have ever been. The deer will run away from you, your horse will probably notice them before you do and might jump a bit, but the deer will get out of your way. Sometimes a bunch of deer will cross over a ride in front of you, but you would be very unlucky it they were very close. They want to keep as far away from you as possible, so it really shouldn't be a problem.

Not a good idea to closely approach a stag in the rutting season - autumn - but again, they generally want to keep as far from you as possible.
