I have the first BE of our season kicking off tomorrow - however the horse is FILTHY! He is light grey and lives out. Obviously with the horrendous weather we've had (snow, rain, snow, rain!) the fields are mud. His legs are black, his face very dark brown and his mane is also brown! Luckily his body is rugged so that IS grey!

I plan to wash his legs and tail. But he HATES having his face washed and what can I do with his mane? If I wash it then I wont be able to plait very well!

Ideas? Or should I just get the power hose out...

Don't know how muddy the mane is, but you could try combing the mud out instead of washing? Or try using a plastic mud scraper thing(sorry cant remember the name of it

), I doubt it's very good for the horses' mane but I've used one before and it worked well.

Do you know it's definately still on? I hope so I can't wait!!! Sky looks horrible here though but not raining yet...

I need to go and wash keats' legs and tail at least but I'm stabled at Goval so we have a hot shower

brush the worse off then use cowboy magic greenspot remover on him, for hes face apply tons of it to a cloth then apply whilst eating food (keeps head down)

the use a clean damp cloth to remove the dirt......

I've got a grey & our soil is orange coloured sand so he comes in looking orange...

Tail - is tail raked so I don't have to plait. I pick out the bits of twig, sticky balls etc & then wash it in a scoop of Vanish in fairly hot water, concentrating on the bottom half. Then I rinse it, put some tesco's value conditioner through it & then rinse it once I've washed the rest of him.

Face + top half of mane - wash in the vanish water using a sponge, rinse off well, towel dry. He doesn't like it, but he should have thought of that before he decided to be a stupid impractical colour. I have to 'top & tail' him most w'ends as we're normally going somewhere, & he's getting used to it. I plait the mane damp, which is do-able but makes the needles slippy.

The dealer he came from used to use a power hose on him to blast the dirt out - haven't had the nerve to try this yet...

I don't get too excited about legs - they're very dark grey anyway & by the time you've warmed up for 5 mins, no-one will be able to tell whether you washed them or not.

NB be careful with the vanish & maybe spot test first as you don't want him to go bald from an allergic reaction.

riaseed007 - I hope it is? I havent heard it isnt. You're lucky having a dark coloured horse!

Keltic2 - Hog it?! He's a slim built Luso x TB! Might look a tad odd... :P

Thanks everyone, I have the Green Spot stuff, Vanish and Tesco stuff lying about so will try a mixture of those!
