In the midst of an office debate today - hacking to meets or shows, how far would you be prepared to ride?

Many moons ago I would happily have 4 or 5 miles to a meet or local show - either because it settled my ride or because I couln't afford the diesel!! Despite having a horse which is hunting fit my friend says anything more that a couple of miles in unfair....... an I just getting old and are we using horse transport rather like our cars - to go to the corner shop!!

I don't know what is acceptable today but when I was a kid I used to hack anywhere between 5 and 10 miles to a meet or horse show. My pony was darned fit!! And she still won all her classes, so couldn't have been too detrimental to her, LOL!!

My horse could hack 15miles and it wouldnt take one ounce of spirit out of him. I usually hack 5 or 6 miles if I really want to go. Ways and means

Used to hack up to 10 miles for a show.

Breeze at 28 would hack 5 miles, do dressage, XC - at breakneck speed, SJ and then try to gallop the 5 miles back.

She would come in the yard jogging sideways, and I would be like a limp piece of pasta.

Relieved - I think I win this one........ people are getting too flippin' soft, apart from anything else a hack home should help to dry the ned off and save hassles when you get home.

Sadly, the point of my debate has ordered a trailer, even if she will only do 3 or 4 mile round trips!!!
