Is it me, or are they a bit pointless?? I like the idea of them, but one of mine in particular manages to empty out the majority of the cubes in about the first 5 seconds. She just thumps it very hard and out they all pour

I'm still using them, as it keeps them a bit occupied trying to get the last 5 high fibre cubes out, but I tend to find scattering a couple of handfuls of cubes over the floor slows down the gluttony a bit more! (large stables with rubber mats so a fair bit of exposed mat) It's actually very funny to watch how quickly she can empty it, albeit comedy value was not the purpose it was intended for.

So do I just have a super-clever horse, or are they all as easily beaten?

Yes, they're easily beaten but it does take longer than a scattering of nuts over the floor. And the look of excitement on her face when it's being filled is worth it :D

I have a snack a ball for Prince and he can empty that in under 5 minutes. he just turns it so the yellow screw filling cap is pointing to the sky, puts his hoof next to the ball and then wobbles it for a couple of minutes against his hoof until there are no nuts left in the ball.

If you let sparky have a turn with it (he's a mini sheltand) he just pushes it in one direction out of the field and gains no nuts!

Prince is just too clever and sparky not quite clever enough!

My boy has a snack a ball, takes him about 20 mins to empty half a scoop of nuts out. He enjoys it though and keeps him entertained for longer

My horse would walk off a cliff edge for his.

I don't use it in the stable as he'd turn it inside out, god the thought of mucking that out the next day  but he does have it in the field, suppose it depends what you put in as to how fast they can empty it, I sometimes stuff half a hand of alfa a in, tends to slow the flow down a bit.

A HHO member very kindly sent him a pink one :D

Chopped chunky carrots in mine so they don't fall out so easily or quickly.

Used in the field. (they'd wreck their beds upside-down if used in the stables).

These treatballs have trained my horses to kick and nudge anything made of plastic that remotely resembles a treatball and is left on the ground, so empty 25 litre water containers, empty 1 litre cider vinegar containers, my sandwich box, my friend's riding hat box, etc....

Mine killed his snak a ball in a day and a half. Anyone got any recommendations for indestructible versions or any other toys, come to that? Horse on box rest :(

My horse loves his. I always make sure it's ready for him when he goes in his stable at night. He has it as his appetiser before his dinner :) :).
My old horse couldn't be bothered by it, he tried to eat his way through it and ended up gouging great bits of plastic out with his teeth. Once he realised he couldn't eat his way through it he got bored and wouldn't play with it anymore.
My late mare wouldn't play with hers either but she was very neat in the stable, I could leave her grooming box and boots in there and she wouldn't move them. I don't think she thought there was much point to it, either that or she thought she was above such silly games :p.

Hovis would follow his to the end of the eartt. i put the larger herbal treats in which makes it harder for him. He adores his and has entertained crowds for hours at shows kicking it about!

I was impressed when our Sec D learned to pull the decahedron towards him rather than push it away. Thus ensuring his field mate never got a go!! I can imagine Hovis doing that.

We also cram full of chaff as well as treats.. might be frustrating but at least we can get out of the field before he empties it.

Ours would follow is off the end of the earth too! We use his in field and it keeps him occupied for hours. He is a bit dim though ;-)

Ditto using the chaff xx

Nits has a snack a ball and I was thinking of up grading her to a decahedron. She also absolutely loves hers and would follow it anywhere. She has also learnt how to empty it in record time which is why I thought I'd try a decahedron one. A bit of hifi slows her down though :)

my sec D loves to play and he has a decahedron treat ball in the stable with carrot and veg and a stable ball with a handle which he chucks around ,also he has tubtrugs that he has killed flat which he throws around, and a dengie field lick which is about the size of a tyre which he bites huge chunks out of , also a salt lick and a garlic horslyx lick-phew!! can you tell he loves to play!!! ;);)

Yellow pony loves his, he gets so excited when he hears me filling it up. He has it in his stable over night but the first night I think he got a little excited as I found it in his water bucket  that or he thought he was a proper footballer. I shove a bit of straw in his occasionally to slow him down. The only thing is that when I open his door in the morning he always tries to stop and get the ones that went under his door and I got through pony nuts really quickly.

It seems HHO has a fair few obsessive, if slightly suicidal, characters then  I am particularly impressed that Hovis managed to attract crowds with his ;)

Don't get me wrong, mine love them too, they just empty them rather fast. I could put some chaff in though, good idea thanks. Or a handful of haylage perhaps.

Surprisingly, my beds don't get too mucked up when they are in there, I think they have both figured out that then they have to root around in there own pee to find the treats:eek:

Mine has his snack a ball over night if he seems a bit stressed (on box rest/restricted turnout) I will be giving it to him in the winter during the day if the weather prevents turnout.

:)

My girl is the same, far to clever for her own good and this one is the hard one to use !! with the snack a ball she has worked out yellow cap on top, tap on hoof push gently away eat loads bring back ball and repeat only a few times and empty the bloody ball !! so both of them do not last five mins with her lol :)

My boy can get them emptied in under 5mins.

Watch if you put hard feed in them as it can turn moldy and soggy and be a pain to try and wash out!
