I have just discovered Decathlon's website, and saw that they do their own brand equipment.

I am looking for a 2nd every day riding hat as my skull cap never always seems to dry out in time, nothing worse than putting on a damp hat ewwwww!

Does anyone have one of their own brand hats, if so how do you find them? I know that they are not BS or PAS standard, but for everday schooling I thought they may be ok?

Personally I would buy another PAS standard hat as you only have one head and you never know when (or even if) that life changing accident could happen.

I personally don't like buying horsey stuff from 'normal' shops as I like to support the equestrian retailers as there are so few small tack shops with knowledgeable staff left.

Personally, I wouldn't use a hat that didn't meet current standards. A fall is a fall, whether you are schooling or doing something else. I would consider it a false economy. But then again, I don't trust myself not to fall off!

I appreciate what you are both saying however they do comply with EC standard EN1384, may not be suitable for use at some riding schools and in competition. Please check with your riding school before purchasing. Surely if they comply with this, then they do offer protection?

Your head, your choice, BS:EN 1384 does give protection and getting a product tested is costly so there are good reasons why a manufacturer would stick to one standard. There was a study done some years ago showing that expensive was not always best if you had a choice of a cheap or expensive hat made by any particular brand.

Last time I looked there are some very expensive hats with exactly the same standard. It gets a bit weird because people say that they would buy the expensive hats but not the cheaper hats, regardless of the fact that the hats meet exactly the same standard.
I also looked into the difference between BS and EN standard numbers because people were saying that the EN standard wasn't as good, but the letters just denote the country and if it's a 1384 it's a 1384, regardless of the letters in front - they meet the same standard.
So personally I buy the hat that fits my head comfortably and is of an acceptable standard, 1384 meets the pony club criteria...

Joy. Please stick with pas or snell standard
1384 is the most basic standard.

If I remember you are riding an inexperienced/young horse. It isn't worth the risk!

Only last night I had to deal with an accident at our dr in the school

Just to get this right in my head - PAS and SNELL are better then 1384 and skulls offer more protection than other riding hats? Onlyasking cos I need to upgrade from a Junior Champion skull to an adults hat very very soon.

Fouganza hats are fabulous :) I've used them for years and swear by them - reasonably priced, look good, and fit really well. I'm on my third one, having given the other two a reasonable amount of abuse by means of falling off!! I don't have a bad word to say about them.

I too have a Fouganza hat and I really rate it. I like light weight hats but all the others I have tried seem to expand. This one remains a good fit and is very comfortable. Mind you I am only a hacky hacker

I haven't actually been into the shop to have a look at them, i saw them on the website and thought they looked nice and lightweight, my head gets very hot regardless of what hat im wearing, hence my skull cap doesn't always dry out in time, i was thinking of looking at one purely for days in the school at home and will use my Pro II for hacking out and jumping etc.,
