is it possible?

Probably be going back up to town to work so decided to sell my Ford Fusion and get the 4 x 4. I will only be using it to get to the stables so although it has to be reliable, it's not the end of the world if it's a bit juicy!

So what would I get for that sort of money?

Need to tow the equivalent of a 510 ifor and 2 x 16.3 horses.....

Any ideas?

You should be able to get a fairly decent Landrover Discovery Diesel for that money which is well up to the job of towing two. You'll definitly need one of the bigger 4 x 4 since you are towing two.

Mines an ES what ever that means R reg and was £5000 three years ago so I think you should be able to get the same for £4000 now and it's doing it's job perfectly.

Just don't get one that's been used on a farm already as they tend to have had a hard life!

Daihatsu Fourtrak - can't beat them for towing and very reliable (disclaimer - I know every breed has exceptions!

Agree with Alibabe - get one without a towbar if possible - then you know its not been put under the strain of towing..

£4k will get you a good Disco or Jeep - both of which will tow the weight you need comfortably..

I think I was looking at a disco or a jeep - I love defenders but it will be my only car so that thought of bouncing down the motorway to see my parents doesn't appeal!

I think I was worried that the sort of age I could afford wouldn't be reliable once it got to that age....

Would I be able to go for the old Jeep or would I need a Grand Jeep Cherokee?

I have the older Jeep - M reg - the towing weight is 3250kg and we towed over 140 miles last week with my two in a 505, couldnt tell we were towing anything - its the petrol although I used to have the diesel and it is just as good, i just prefer having an auto....

the jeep is our only car and its doing a great job, even for just nipping to Sainsburys in...

Discos are a great 4x4. My uncle owns one and swears by it. Even his wife who is terrible at driving has no problems using it. He has only used it for towing dog trailers, but I would imagine it would be up to the job of pulling a horse trailer

Cheeky! a girl on my yard and another guy have these and I have to say I quite like them!

We currently have a 97 jeep cherokee 2.5td and its fab .

Its got a bit of a "whhooossshh" affect and it can shift when it wants too .

great for everyday use, do like the discos, Im in a bit of a predicament too .... whether to stay with the cherokee or go for a disco , There is a disco coming up for sale very near by so im very tempted but again discos are slower and dont have the get up and go as the cherokee has .

I would say go for a cherokee :P

Yep, surf or disco - 3lt surf very gutsy and tows superbly. 300Tdi disco also tows very well but a bit slower off the mark. Don't bother with the 2.5 surf, reliability probs with engine.
You would and R/S plate disco easy for £4k, maybe even newer. Watch for high mileage though- if so make sure cambelt has been done.

Ive got a dhaitshu fourtrak for sale- it has a huge towing capacity (3500kg) and is one of the best most reliable cars for towing just read all the reviews on them on the net people are desperate for them now as they have stopped making them.. Mine is top spec, P reg and has only done 67k miles if you are interested.
