Hi,

Just wondering if anyone can recommend me a decent wool hunt coat? Preferably black as my velvet hat is black. Currently i have a navy Caldene jacket which I picked up second hand, however it is very thin and now that I'm starting to hunt a little more regularly with my current horse I thought it was a good time to start thinking about getting something a little more suitable.

However this will be on a budget. I can't afford the very expensive hunt coats, and will possibly have to go second hand, but was wondering if anyone can recommend a make that is the best fit, quality and over all best value for money? Could very possibly be something I ask for for my Birthday in August, but if I see something on eBay or similar before then cheap enough I would buy myself.

Thanks in advance.

Mine is from shires, i thought it was very reasonable and i love the fit. Its lovely and warm too.

Perhaps if your tight on budget try looking on ebay?

I've got a black caldene I've had for 20 years -it's still very warm and waterproof.

I've just bought myself a navy version :)

Best of all would be a bespoke one -which do crop up on eBay (look at hogspear as a hunting kit seller) and the vintage tack shop -I've just sold my Frank Hall hunt coat as a lost cause in ever fitting me again! ! Sold it for £150 and new o reckon you could add at least a nought to the price. ...

I ordered the shires. Malborough I think. but it went straight back. The fabric felt stiff and so heavy, im sure the collar would've rubbed me and just didnt seem like it would be comfy. previous posts here seem to suggest the equetech coat is good so I may try that. in the mean time will continue with the one I got from ebay. which I picked up for around 50 and is an older harry hall jacket, very comfy actually and still waterproof as out to the test before xmas!
