Decision Made.

I've finally decided to move my boy to a new yard. I know its not ideal for him because he wont have any company in the stable block at nights, but i have chosen the stable carefully ( large, brick built, does look out onto a road and fields, so he'll have something to look at ) He'll see horses an cows whilst turned out. I've thought long and hard about this and its not been easy for me. To the people who replied to my post the other day, a big thank you for your advice.

Good on you Could you not get him a companion, perhaps a retired horse on loan? Any excuse for more horses hehe

Yeyyyy *wonders off to find out why im yeyyy-ing * ... I wouldnt be worried about company in the stable block, mine was the only horse in our stable block in at night al through the summer and tbh he didnt care, all he cared about was the food lol ... Hope all goes well good luck

If he could be out with/near others overnight at the new place that might be better. But it sounds like he'll only be able to see (not be turned out with) other horses during the day and be totally isolated at night. TBH that doesn't sound great. :-( Be very careful to watch out for any behavioural changes and spend as much time as you can just being up there with him so he gets your company in place of his usual friends. You'll have to learn to be his herd as well as his rider!

Not trying to be rude but in my view the most important aspect of my horses well being is equine company, anything else is secondary to his needs. I don't know why you are moving him but think long and hard about it if he doesn't have interaction with other horses you could be asking for all sorts of problems and at the least a very unhappy horse.

Thanks for your replies. JSR i know that you're not being rude, i hope the yard gets more livery's or perhaps one thats already there may move their horse to keep mine company. I loved the yard i was on and im sad to be leaving. I am stuck in a vicious circle. Im trying to beat depression and because of this my brain has to have parts of my life in little boxes. I rent a house from YO, so horse an home life are in the same box. I don't ride him or see him, i sit at home an binge, getting fatter, an more worried that im too heavy for him, thus getting more depressed. Its a blessing that my OH doesn't mind seeing to my boy. I need to get my horse back into my life because he's been my rock.

Big hugs to you! Everything will be fine, don't worry. Many horses live on their own fine, and anyway, like you said, more people may move on...

Try and get down to your yard and get involved more. It will help you. If you really think that you're too heavy (bet you're not really), lead him out in hand for walks - the change of scene will do you both good.

In that case you do what is needed to get yourself back. Your horse is a huge bonus to your life, I know right now it all seems like hard work but he's your biggest asset in creating a new positive outlook. Once your head is in the right place you'll be able to get out more, mix with like minded horse mad fools like ourselves and enjoy the freedom and peace a horse give us.
