I'm doing a one day event on Sunday and trying to get my head round the transport options. I thought if I wrote it down and got some views it might help. I will try to keep it short!
First the background.
Last year, out of the blue my horse took issue with loading in the trailer one day. He loaded, changed his mind, rushed out the back and fell over, hurting his back. It took me a while, but by the start of the winter I was able to load him in my trailer without the partition. Then we had the snow, holidays etc and I didn't load him for ages. I've loaded him on the yard recently but not to go anywhere. We had a bit of too-ing and fro-ing but I was able to get him in and for him to stand happily in the closed trailer. In between we have had a few trips out with friends and he will happily go into the trailer as long as there is another horse in there. He won't go in first if there is a partition.
When I moved yards in October, my friend took us in her lorry and he loaded straight away on his own but I haven't had him in a lorry since.

On Sunday there are 4 horses going to the ODE. Two are doing the first class and will need to leave yard about 8. I'm not on until alomost 1pm so would ideally leave about 11. The other horse doing the second class is going by lorry but he is huge and the lorry owner feels it would be too much to take mine as well. No way could I tow both of them.
So do I go with

plan A - take mine and one of the ponies doing class 1. This means I would have to leave early but could plat etc when I got there. It also means the other horse would have to come early too as the lady transporting him doesn't want to load him on her own as she doesn't kinow him well (he belongs to another livery and the rider is also doing class 1). Fair bit of hanging around for both of us. The lorry driver is ok with this.

plan B - work on the assumption that I will be able to load mine on his own and just allow plenty of time to do it. Then I can help load the other horse and we can both set off later. I'm just concerned if my horse is excited I might run into problems.

plan C - put my horse on the lorry and take the other horse in trailer. His owner does travel him by trailer but I'm not sure about having such a big horse in a trailer although I would be well within my weight limit. This plan would also fall apart if my horse didn't load on the lorry.

I know I need to deal with this problem and am planning to take my horse show jumping on his own in a couple of weeks when I don't have to pre-enter so it won't matter if I don't get there.

Anyway, after all that I am still tending towards Plan A- but any thoughts welcome!

I think I would go with plan A. There is nothing worse than being late, plait there and have a chill. Just take a nice haynet, I'm sure your horse won't mind.

If he is quiet and will stand nice in or tied to the trailer when you are there...then plan A is the winner.

He will be fine with a haynet I think as the other horse will be there too. Will probably do lots of calling to his mates though so I will pack ear plugs!
I love the idea of chilling, but I'm always a nervous wreck before I compete!
