i gave been umming and ahhing over selling my horse as he is becoming too strong for me and i dont feel experienced to deal with him ridden wise anymore and would be better suited to someone else, much as i love him

ive been offered a swap from someone my friend got her three horses from (all were as described, suitable etc) who owns a trekking centre and whos wife is a instructor so they school + hack the horses and those they don't keep for the centre they sell
an advantage of to this is i will get a horse good to hack, in traffic with a bit of schooling who will hopefully be a confidence giver as mine has been knocked with current horse, and current horse will either be kept for the trek centre or get the schooling he needs by a professional and sold to a more suited home as i know i would struggle to sell him myself

does this sound a good idea? i may even be able to get a trial of some sort but im not sure? of course will have vetting, lots of viewings, take experienced friend etc with me im told he always has a few in

Go for it, we had a mare who was so unsuited for what we wanted, she is now happy with my daughter and we found our perfect horse.
Just make sure you are happy with the swap, take as many trials as you need as the wrong horse can knock confidence, nothing wrong with the horse it's just not right for you.
Good luck

It could be the perfect solution, you get a good home that can manage your horse, without the hassle of people coming to try him. Just make sure you actually want one of the ones offered in exchange and not having it because you feel you should.

Agree with above, sounds like a good deal, just be sure you want to do it before it's a done deal. Is it possible that some lessons with the right instructor could make things work with your current horse? Just something to consider. Good luck whichever way you go.

ive been having lessons the last few months and whilst i am a bit better i still dont feel in control in canter/out hacking, he is quite strong minded and i am more gentle in my approach so it isnt really a good partnership, he has also bolted with me so it would be hard to get my confidence back with him whilst i am ok on others, just think he needs someone with a bit more guts as he isnt malicious just knows his strength

I'd say then that it's well worth looking into the swap. You've done everything you can so don't need to feel bad. With all the time, effort and money that goes into having horse it would be mad to keep one you don't feel safe with. Good luck with the exchange and I hope it all works out well for you. :)
