Found a lovely yard yesterday.....it's a work in progress (new school being built and cross country course) but the turnout is amazing. Would also save me about £100 a month as I wouldn't have to pay out for horsewalker to stop the boy going stiff.

Have a few worries though:

They turn out overnight but there is no one on site. Wouldn't normally bother me but I don't think he's been out at night and is blind in one eye. My last horse had an accident over night and was shot, but he was spotted early morning by someone in the caravan site that backs onto my parents.....if something happened at new yard, would anyone notice until themorning?

What if I move him and we go back to the horrible state we were in last year (although really this shouldn't happen as he'll be ridden everyday)

I really like the girls at my yard now.....

Just finding out whether there's room there......just feel my horsey should be out for 8 hours a day and enjoying being a horse - especially as I'm going to up the pressure a bit re. competing etc....

Do you have the option of bringing him in at night at all? Any others in at night?

Would you ever feel comfortable about turning him out over night whilst no-one was there? I think you've answered that question in your post, and perhaps would be better off finding somewhere where you could either have him in over night (and someone to turn out am) or someone on site.

But saying that, in your heart of hearts you must know that accidents can happen at any time, and that sometimes you just have to bite the bullet and take a chance.

Would anyone notice if there was any problem with him during the night even if there were people on site?! After all it would be dark!
Mine are out 24/7 with no one on site at one of the fields and i've never had one problem.
I think, as you say, you should let him be a horse, despite his blindness in one eye, so long as he's with company, IMO he'll thrive!

Cairo has one eye, wears a mask overnight and it out 24 x 7 in summer. The house is nearby but overnight field could not be seen. Whilst he is a steady old chap, I have no more worries about him being out overnight than I would during the day.

Many people have their horses out 24 x 7 with no problems and I would personally go for the extra turnout.

thanks guys! I think what I'd do is ask for him to come in at night for the first week and then then he's fully settled in with the field surroundings etc chuck him out all night.

Keep your fingers crossed that a space comes up for us!
