decisions on possible swap

ive been offered a swap as my horse needs a more experienced rider than i am as he is stubborn and knows his own strength and mind, ive been offered a quiet gelding ride and drive snaffle mouthed mid weight cob (not seen yet going wednesday) which would be ideal as i just want to happy hack and do the odd local show, i just feel so guilty as i would have no control over where he ends up as the swap is with a sort of dealer, he owns a trekking centre and his wife is an instructor who sells horses on that arent suitable for trekking centre

im not sure what i should do, i know a swap is much easier as i know his horses are "bombproof" so more suited to what i need but i do love my horse still even if it isnt the most suitable type, we have had lessons etc but even the instructor said he was fighting her and his personality just doesnt match mine, im very laid back and chilled and he needs a boss

i feel for you hun as sometimes things just don't work out the way you want them too. don't worry about the swap until you have seen the horse in mind for you. remember to be open minded and don't take their word for it go see him/her a few times in different settings as you don't want to swap one unsuitable horses for another.

thanks, he has a few horses (rest atm are mares tho and i dont do mares! haha) just this gelding in atm but always seems to be getting new ones in every few weeks so if i dont like this one, i can wait and see others later on so at least there is less pressure there! my friend has swapped a few of hers with him over the years and he takes them back no fuss often see the trekking centre out on busy roads so at least i know they are traffic proof lol

i am taking experienced friends with me to assess as they know exactly what i need and will be my words of wisdom, he doesnt have a school so i will have to hack it to test it out, the ultimate test i suppose as my current horse has left me a bit nervous of hacking as he has bolted a few times

While you're there have a quick look over the mares anyway - sometimes the perfect horse isn't quite what we thought it would be.

It wont cost you anything once you're already there and it's no skin of anyones noses if you don't take a fancy to any of them as he knows it's a gelding that you're after really.

im sure your far more savvy and wise than i was- but just dont fall into the thought that an ex trekking horse always makes goor solo riding horse- i fell into that trap and ended up with a horse that napped badly alone and couldnt cope with being a solo horse.

probably teaching a granny to suck eggs but thought it worth a mention.
