I personally would not use planks of any kind. I think most manufacturers and repair places use Sheets of marine ply.

Probably not... its probably safer to use materials designed for the job as i would imagine things can get quite messy if a plank breaks whilst the trailer is doing 60mph on the motorway!

Depends on the thickness of the decking; If it's 30mm thick, 1800mm wide, with a metal support at 900mm (or there abouts) pressure treated and sealed - it expect it would be fine. The same at 6mm think, it'll just break.....

Oh, and I'm quite sure you can't get 30mm thick decking planks BTW.

Google 'Youngs Modulus' and 'Hookes Law' then you can work our exactly what material you COULD use for your size or trailer, etc etc.

Oh the Engineering days are coming back to me lol tempted to work it out now.....maybe not

No it wouldnt be suitable as it would be fast grown weak wood and full of knots creating points of weakness. It would also deteriorate quickly when wetted by urine. If you are having a wooden floor you need marine ply which is much stronger and water resistant.

HOW MANY TIMES FOR CHRISTS SAKE !!!! there is a safe and cost efective flooring for trailers and lorrys ..PHENOL PLY AKA wisa deck ,antislip mesh ,gorilla board !!!
DO NOT USE MARINE PLY IT WILL ROT AS IT IS NOT WATER OR HORSE PEE PROOF !!!
it is NOT suitable as flooring or ramp facing as for decking why would you risk it when there is a proven safe matitial thats easly avalaible?????????????

Thanks all for the advice. I bought unseen a trailer from ebay , unseen as I am to agoraphobic to go and see it as it was too far, also a friend of a friend collected for me. Sadly all tyres bar one are cracked and dangerous.. the floor and ramp are decking and the front ramp is broken and cannot be opened.

Having been told it was used regularly, had a new floor and ramp I stupidly assumed I could believe the seller was selling me a safe trailer....:(

So sorry this has happened to you. The same thing happened to me with a trailer I actually went to see - there was a lot wrong with it but it wasn't totally obvious to the untrained eye and I trusted the seller - more fool me! I ended up having to scrap mine having never had my horse in it and nearly 1k out of pocket. Don't take any chances with the floor. Get a proper trailer place to take a look and reccomend. Even though I had to scrap mine, I am glad I found out before I put my horse on it!

Agree whole heartedly. Also, marine ply, when wet, becomes like a skating rink!

I don't agree that timber is necessarily unsuitable as it depends on the timber and thickness, but it would probably be much more expensive to use hardwood boards (oak or elm?).
