My horse has a deep flexor tendon injury. He has been lame since the beginning of the year and we've been and got him x-rays and MIR scans and they have finally diagnosed him with deep flexor tendon injury after changing there minds a few times.. He's had steroid injections but they didn't really do much so we went back to the vets a few months ago and they said he has improved but not fully but they did give him a nerve block and made me trot him in a circle and he looked a lot better so they think it is slowly getting better. The other thing they had in mind to do was cut out the feeling in his hooves so I would have a sound horse but clearly it doesn't sound very safe so I choose to go with leave him until spring and see how he goes. Just really wanna know what people think about all this? if he goes become sound what will he be able to do because I use to low level jump him? Aswell would it be a good idea to have him wearing tendon boots while he is out in the field? Just wanna make sure I'm giving him the best chance.

Where is the injury?

You write about denerving the feet but then ask if tendon boots on his legs will help?

Well the vet didn't make it very clear but he said they could cut the nerves in his feet/legs and then I would have a sound horse? He didn't really make it clear what he could cut.. :/ Sorry I'm not the greatest of help

You need to know whether the lesion is in his leg or in his foot, the treatment and prognosis for each are completely different. Also, front legs or back ones?

I guess as they are considering denerving the injury is within the foot, very different from the more obvious injuries to the tendons that are in the leg between the fetlock and back of the knee. Tendon boots will be of no benefit as they protect from knocks to the tendons not offer any support to the lower area where your horses injury is, your horse needs the support from having the best feet you can get him to grow, a well balanced foot is essential to give the tendon a chance of healing.
I have done a search on here and found a few threads that are worth reading and may help clarify what you are dealing with, your horse will require a careful rehab, going barefoot is probably the most successful option for long term soundness, if the injury is not too serious then there is hope of recovery but you will probably need to do plenty of research and be able to question your vet in more detail as to what the actual injury is to get a better picture of the prognosis.

The vets were not very clear from the start with what was up with him so we was back and fourth with different opinions like before they thought he had coffin disease? and now he's just got a tendon injury. He is injured with his left front leg and is currently wearing bar shoes. Before I was told he needed to wear normal shoes but he started to stick his leg straight when he was standing in the field so I got told about bar shoes and he hasn't really done it much since then.
