Deep litter bedding, trying to remember

Ages ago there was a thread on deep litter bedding and one person posted that she used something that she only needed to change every year. At the moment I am using elephant grass which is quite good, but would like to try an alternative. I have rubber matting and like a good deep bed. I find it easier to just lift the poo routinely and do a huge clear out as needed.

It's miscanthus grass. It's dried and chopped. Cheaper than shavings and more absorbent, though not as absorbent as aubiose.

Mysef and Krash 'n' Burn deep littered all winter, me on straw, KnB on flax. Our reaons for choosing what we did were: my horse doesn't wee much but poos a lot, so straw was enough to absorbed the wet and I found it easier to skim the poo off it; her horse is very wet but doesn't poo much so the flax absorbed the wet better and as the poo gets mixed in with it easier it wasn't too bad as there wasn't much of it.
However, they go out 24/7 on Monday (hopefully) and as it was cheaper for the last couple of weeks KnB has put straw on top of the flax that remained and it's worked so well we're both thinking of doing this next winter.
 
I moved my horse to my current yard over a year ago. I put rubber mats down on the front third of his concrete floored stable and a deep litter bed of shavings on the back 2 thirds. After 1 year it's as good as new and will be staying down for next year or for as long as it stays smelling sweet and fresh. My YO (who taught me how to do a proper deep litter bed) has had her deep litters - also bog standard shavings - going for over THREE years now and they too are still fresh and sweet. You have to look after them and pull the back of the bed to the front regularly, topping up at the back with fresh. I'm sure you know that! Just can't keep gob closed!!!! xxx
 
One year I had a my mare deep littered on shavings, but changed her to straw, but left the deep litter shavings base down, it worked really well.
