Hi all, its been a long time since I posted and although I hate to admit it,, I have missed some of you :eek:oo:.
The deer hunting season is under way and the surrounding hills are awash with big jeeps and the most pathetic collection of 'men' sporting new hunting gear and big guns . They are paying a lot of dosh to shoot roe deer who DO NOT RUN AWAY!!!!!!!!!! This isnt 'sport' this is 'sitting duck' shooting and cuddly toys should be given out as prizes-preferably ones made in China! :smirk:
Im riding a friends eventer every morning (6 am) and Im amazed at the number of deer I have on my land alone! Its crazy, they are everywhere, I counted 18 yesterday in the radius of half a k-I didnt count the same deer twice :)! Knowing nothing about deer and their habits, am I right in presuming that there really is a huge overpopulation of roe? I found it strange to see so many and not one of them bothering about me! Are they less shy if met by a horse and rider? I swear, these guys just kept on grazing and didnt bat an eyelid. Answers on a postcard ..Mairi. :)
PS, saw my first live badger this morning-beautiful beastie .

I wouldn't say that too loudly here. The Hunting Fraternity would be straight out to blast its head off. Men with big guns and hunting gear - sounds like most of the mob on this forum. You know what the gun is an extension of don't you?

Poor little chaps.

No need to round here, if you were so inclined. Now the cubs have been turfed out of the setts, the traffic's killing them in dozens.

I used to ride in a deer park; one day we saw a hind giving birth and stopped to watch for a bit. She didn't take any notice of the horses but when a dog appeared in the distance her 'midwife' hind friend got very agitated. These deer were definitely not bothered by horses & their riders because they knew we were not predators.

Hmm..Mairi, strange about your roe deer. On Exmoor they are generally very shy,, although that maybe because I am accompanied on walks by a hunting dog..haven't seen any on horseback.

I DO find it a bit peculiar that the antis (Blairite eg) seem to always try to link sexual overtones to hunting in all its forms. Is it because they envy us, I can't help wondering? Are they so grossly inadequate that any excuse is good for a bit of serious envy? Poor diminutives!

Get out there and give them a lead pill. Preferably out of a large calibre rifle.

Always does the trick down on my boar shooting patch.
