What would take down a deer in the wild? Found a deer skeleton in my field the other day and was wondering what might have killed it.

Old Age? Surrey Puma (although probably a bit out of his range!!!).

Even though 'in the wild' Not many places in England are really that wild anymore so could have been dogs but I tend to agree with Piebald and say natural causes. When a deer is hunted by man they remove the head and take the rest.A fox might have dragged it depending on what sort of deer, obviously not a huge one.

apparently he has it in his flat! just imagen the smell- yuck

It's scary when you think like that. We found a little stag on the beach (above the tideline). Our only guess was that he'd fallen from a cliff.

What was even worse was when a young dead porpoise was washed up on the same beach. Nearly 5 feet long, and the only injury was a huge bite to the throat. -shivers- Makes you wonder what lurks in welsh waters...

Many reason for death. 1) Poachers poorly shooting them. Their dogs can also bring down a deer, (infact a large pet dog on the rampage can do the same on roe deer).
2) Injuries caused by road traffic accidents that get infected will cause a slow death. If lucky they can also survive with a broken leg that heals or one that is even severed off completely!
3) Internal parasites.
4) Bucks fighting causing a lung puncture to one will often finally die.
