Hi. My horse was diagnosed with DJD 18months ago. My vet recommended Cosequin. I used this over the summer and into the autumn and he did stay soundish. However, this is a costly product and decided to try naf 5*. I have only used this for a month but i've seen no real effect. He is lame most days and my vet doesn't think the joint is any worse than it was to begin with so i'm gonna buy some more Cosequin. Can anyone offer me any advise? Cheers

My cob has DJD / bone remodelling/ringbone and he was barely 1/10th lame when diagnosed with Xrays on both front fetlock/pasterns in 2005 when he was 13 years old. The first year he had Adequan , a prescribed pure glucosamine supplement and 1/2 a bute a day. No roadwork or jumping on hard ground. By the next winter he was happily hunting again and spending summers quietly hacking around the woods with his sharer. As my vet says- he is hunting sound , doesnt nerve block any sounder so its clearly a mechanical unsoundness rather than pain.
He is now on the Gold Label pure glucosamine and it seems to have worked as well as the vet supplied one but a 1/4 of the price. My vet did say that if he got lamer then he should be re xrayed to check for further changes and this is what may well be worth doing in your case.
Good luck-As my vet said " it doesnt necessarily mean the end of the world just a change of job description"

One of the girls on the yard has found Cosequin on t'internet for £90, not sure where though. Might be worth googling. If no joy, let me know and I will get the info for you.

Thanks very much. Any advice is much appreciated. Would just love to be out doing stuff with Freddie, he loved his work and he's getting really bored. Glad you've found something that works - i'm hoping i can find something soon!

My horse was diagnosed with DJD in the hock about 7 yrs ago. I tried liquid cortaflex, cortaflex with HA etc, and the herbal tonics with devils claw.
A few yrs ago I discovered Extraflex HA (feedmark) and it has made a HUGE difference to him - to his stride length in particular. I am sticking with it now. I think the HA in particular really helps.
He has 1 bute a day if he gets esp stiff, but he is up to hacking and dressage/showing.

Have you considered a course of Adequan joint injections or failing that a cortisone injection? Newmarket Joint supplement is very good and lasts for ages if you go on the vetuk website you can get it much cheaper.
