Demodectic mange - any experiences?

We think that one of the Border Terriers at the yard has Demodectic mange, her skin is thickened and scaley, particularly on her legs. None of the other dogs are affected. She will be going to the vets, but I just wondered if anyone has any experience, I have a feeling that it may be difficult to cure (impossible?) and it may be a 'control' situation?

Thanks!

I have a friend who's poodle had this, the dog passed away a few months ago but had demodectic for about 9 years. Yes it is impossible to cure, but can be managed. It will always be unsightly when there is a flair up but hardly detectable when under control. Patches seem to flair up, skin will be red, weeping, eventually crusting over and blacken. Vet gave antibiotics and a dip, also washing in hibiscrub helps. Most bad patches were around the eyes, ears and bum, also feet became very greasy.

The dog never really appeared to be in any distress by scratching or anything, just looked awful. It takes a lot of dedication to look after and nurse these dogs as their appearance can be so awful, most people will assume the dog is contagious, but it is not.. Good luck..

You might want to have a look at a cream called Nu-stock. I have used it for my dog who suffered from repeated patches of skin irritation last year that kept requiring steroid and antibiotic treatment from the vet. I came across it on Google when looking up info on skin irritations.

The testimonials page on their site has some pretty impressive before and after pictures of dogs that have been treated with the cream. They claim that it will cure red mange which I think is the same as demodectic mange.

It certainly "did what it said on the tin" for my dog. After only two or three applications her skin settled down and she has not had any reoccurrence since.

Hope this helps.
