Ok after the mysterious swelling of my mares four legs (as described in my previous post), which we thought was linked to wet field or feeding related. Anyway vet recommended to cut the haylage down incase that had anything to do with it but she has lost weight over the past week or two and I didnt want her dropping anymore. Couldnt get a hold of any hay due to work etc so over the past few days I have upped her Hi-Fi Lite, last night she had about 2 rounds scoops and this morning the same again. But this afternoon my sister let her out in the outdoor and she went nuts, bucking galloping you name it, compared to Fri night were we actually had to run up and down the arena like complete plonkers to encourage her to move her fat bottom  Tonight she has come up in little limps on her flanks and sides which im quessing is down to the Hi-Fi, not to sure wheather the Hi-Fi is linked to the swelling legs though as shes still on bute until tues and her legs are now cold and not swollen except the sides of her hinds just above her fetlocks (but is decreasing each day). Anyone else had similar problems? I used to feed my last tb about 5 scoops of Alfa - A Oil per day and never had issues but horses for courses and all that!!

My boy went nuts on dengie hi-fi, can't remember if it was original or lite though - but he was a nightmare and we had to stop feeding it. I feed conditioning fiber now with no problems.

No-one else come across this

PS .. anyone know of a low sugar (sugar makes her spooky!!) alfalfa free chaff?

We have to avoid alfalfa, and run away from sugar like the plague, because of issues with a previous horse, so use Graze-on (mixed dried grasses), or if we run out Readi-grass (dried rye-grass).
AFAIK even hi-fi lite has some molasses.

I use just grass, it's freeze dried grass. I'm glad this thread has come up actually as we have a nf who is on hifi lite and has suddenly gone nuts, maybe this could be the problem

I have 5 ponies on hi fi lite one of them is naturally very forward going and can be strong. But I don't have any issues with any of them. The Shetland only has a tiny bit as a token gesture because I don't want to buy her something completely different and only really give her a feed because all the others get one and it would be mean for her to not have anything.

I did see someone suggest that free lowing chaff [like Dengie Hi Fi] had anti mould stuff added to it, this could cause allergy, as could other things.
There are only two Dengie products with no molasses, one has a high proportion of alfalfa, one has not. The bags are confusingly similar.

I have had a pony come out in itchy lumps on her flanks caused by intolerance of bute! it drove her crazy. We took her off the bute and she improved dramatically. She had bute previously without problems so this s something that can develop in a pony with no past history of intolerance to bute.

Thanks for suggestions il look into those :) I think its more the alfalfa that the molassas tbh!! Weve never had problems with her going loopy and coming up in lumps which suggests it must be the increase in the Hi-Fi otherwise its a huge coincidence! We used to have her on Mollichaff showshine which was very sugary, she didnt come up in lumps etc just went very spooky. This darn horse seems to take a lot of reactions!

Ladylina83 ... Shes in as our fields are to muddy (water up to fetlocks) so were not allowed to turnout anymore :( Were going to have to move though as there is no way im keeping her in 24/7, I would much prefer her out!!

Angieandben ... I feed fast fibre aswell, I mix chaff in with it as she eats to quickly :)

Interesting!! She took a reaction to her flu and tet and to a painkiller the vet gave her last week!

Hi

Used it on a few horses for years and never had any problem with it. Still know lots that use it but it was the low heat etc one.

I had a pony that went nuts on sedalin?? Sounds like allergy/lymph drainage etc

Only used hi fi lite when they were being worked and in very small half trug quantitiy with a bit of speedibit in(more a treat in cold weather). Handful pony nuts. and probably only 2-3 times a week. Otherwise hay/grass.

Good luck hope your horse gets better.

I have to say that I use a very small amount of HiFi Lite in my feeds and I noticed with the latest bag that the chaff is really sweet and sticky - concerning for me as I have a sugar and cereal intolerant horse.

Hi fi molasses free seems to have sent my mare crazy. It's weird, I can't imagine what's in it but as soon as I took her off it she went back to normal.
She is fine on alfa-a molasses free.
