Does any one feed this?? i have a 12yo thoroughbred mare who has lost quite a bit of condition over winter. she cant be fed any molasses or sugar as she is very fizzy. word on the grapevine is that i will be able to feed Alpha A oil and it will help with condition and wont make her mental. Currently feeding dengie HI-fi, Allen and page ride & relax and spillers fiber cubes. Was intending to swop hi-fi for alpha a oil.

P.s. thank you the person who recommended the harbridge. have brought one off ebay so will try soon.

alfa a and alfaaoil both contain more protien than hifi so in theory will make the horse more fizzy. However it is not usually a great difference. Some times putting weight on out weighs the need to keep the fizzyness to a minimum.
However i have a tb ex-racer on alfa a and he is fine and i have an anglo-arab (fruit loop) on alfa a oil with no hassel.

yeah? well shes an ex racer too. i think the best thing to do is a bit o trial and error!!! think i ill get on the dengie website for a bit n check bit more thanks

trail and error is best.
There also this stuff called o-grass which sounds like some sort of illegal drug but is actually really yummy, but i cant remeber who stocks it.

i can think of any other weight gain no fizz stuf lol.

i feed my mare alfa-a oil and it dosent make her at all fizzy, same with my very hot warmblood - it dosent make him fizzy either.

one word of advice tho is introduce it to their feed in very small amounts as both my two turned their noses up at it, but will eat it happily now.

what flavour is Alpha A oil? Im loving the minty tang of the Lite version and add vege oil to it, but might be more economical to go for oil instead?

I would not feed to much of the alpha oil as it is an acquired taste. I mix mine with Mollichaff show shine

ive checked out the website n there is alpha a lite. this might be a good starting point. but to begin with ill mix it in with the rest of my hi-fi n see how it goes. she quite greedy n eats anything so i dont think she will turn her nose up. any way ive emailed them to see what they think. its hard at my yard in winter as we dont have a school. we use the one at the next yard (not far away) so conditioning is a major prob.

I fed alphaA oil to my old gelding and it made him really fizzy, he was a total loon and spooked and leapt about... I switched him to the hi-fi vetran and he calmed down loads.

But my current mare is on regular alpha-a with a generous splash of corn oil and she is fine (well no wilder than usual anyway

I think it depends on how sensitive your horse is to feeds. My mare has a cast iron constitution LOL

This is the thing. my mare is crazy normally and thats with restricted sugar etc. so ideally im looking for a chaff type feed that either keeps her as normal or clams her down (impossible i know) but i like the dengie feeds. it seems value for money

put her on straight Alpha A then add normal veg oil (supermarket stuff) which is a weight gainer, not as good as alpha A oil and if she doesn't heat up you could try oil one. But you can feed up to a mug of veg oil for weight gain

My boy went a bit hyper on Alfa A Oil last year (it has the same feed quality as a medium heat mix) - he won't eat Hi Fi so he's now on the regular Alfa A which he loves and thankfully it doesn't fizz him up. I add Soya Oil to this (kind of a big splodge in each feed) and it seems to be doing the trick

i didnt know this???!!! litterally bog standard veg oil??? could i add it to the hi-fi at the mo?? caz im not gonna start the alpha a lite until end of month (pay day!) would it be worth grabbing a bit on way home??

Yes, my AngloArab mare has been having it for the past three months - she is very pregnant (due in 3 weeks) and it has extra Vitamin E apparently which is supposed to be good for preggies. It doesn't seem to have any effects like fizzing her up though

I was a big fan of Alfa A oil for my arab when he was hunting. Any sweet feed, at all, fried his brains, so I put him on soaked oats and Alfa A oil and he was a changed beastie. He was much calmer (by his standards), happier and kept weight and condition on better than he ever had before. It worked for us, but then, what works for one doesn't always do the job for the next.

For good condition and top line without fat and fizz, I would 100% recommend Top Spec Cool and Condition cubes. My mare has never looked so good on them and has good workable energy without being stupid and whilst they have kept her weight and top line good, they don't seem to make her fat like some condition cubes I have used.

i read that it takes horses about two weeks to adjust to the extra oil in the diet.
Alpha A oil seemed to make my boy quite grumpy at first but gives him a lovely shiney coat, I've stuck with it but have not seen any great improvement in weight, possibly as previously pointed out the calorie value is comparable to the regular Alpha A, he now gets coolmix too to add some extra calories
