Dengie Price increase?

In my farm shop today and one of the girls (whom works there) was on phone to her hubby and she said "i need to by a few extra bags of good doer as the prices are going up from 1st Sept" - she looked a bit sheepish when she saw me.... any one else heard of substantial price hikes (i am stocking up tomorrow just incase !)
 
I think we can safely say most feed, hay, straw etc will go up AGAIN this year. Unless your buying it by the palet load I doubt you will save alot so I won't bother stocking up. Don't like feeding my mice, little buggers are fat
 
Many Dengie feeds are based on straw so theyre bound to go up. As will all the other brands. Like monsters i dont see much point in stocking up for the sake of saving a few pence- unless you feed a bag a week or more.
 
Well last year when it was a bad time for harvest etc (I don't know much about it) the value of grains, wheat and raw feed stuffs like that went up by 200% per tonne :eek: (according to our books at work)
So I'm very very sure they prices will go up again this year - unfortunately :(

Was told about this YM who works for one for largest horse feed merchants in the country. Dengie is always the first to go up apparently but all our feed will rise in price this winter, this is just the start.

True I'm afraid.....we had the letter last week. Price hikes are not too bad from what I've seen 50p - £1 on some products, but to be expected as price of transport has gone through the roof, plus raw materials such as plastic for packaging have gone up too, not to mention the rise in cereal and forage prices. It's knocking on into most companies not just dengie I'm sorry to say, as well as in supermarket grocery channels.

About 50p - £1 per bale, and I think other companies will follow pretty soon, as mollichaff is straw based it's sure to go up, but I don't think it will be a huge increase TBH, so no need to panic just yet!!
 
wow the feed companies must have a fantastic JIT (just in time) supply chain.... surely they are not taking advantage of all the hype around poor yeilds etc to make a quick extra few quid are they?????

Wonder if they will be as quick when the prices fall? -call me synical or call me gingerwitch !
 
I can understand prices going up when raw materials go up......but when the price of the raw materials comes down will the Dengie price fall to follow suit? Somehow I doubt it. :(

Yes, I wondered that. Whereas hay prices seem to go up and down, everything else horse feed related just seems to go up and up.
 
Ive never known hay prices go down only up and up every year whatever the yield weather etc.
add to that the vat rise so the farrier is increasing prices.
add to that feed companies rises,
i think there's going to be some skinny horses this winter or some very skint ( even more than usual) owners.
im hoping its the usual hype causing supply and demand.
 
is it also to cover the 20% vat in Jan? or has someone said that already.

No point in me bulk buying as another poster said it would just feed the rats if it wasnt in containers.

I agree! :)

It will affect all feeds based on crops that have been affected by this years weather- so chaff, grass, cereals. pretty much all feeds! i dont know about the sugar beet crop because its not been harvested yet.

I agree though, prices never come down when the harvests are good :mad:
 
Hi all :)

I am a retailer and have just received my latest price update from one of my wholesalers. The rises have been made by Baileys, Dengie, Fancy Feeds, Mollichaff and Blue Chip and range from 30 pence to a whopping £2.50 :confused:. This is due to the oil rises and our crop prices have risen by 20 to 30% this year. A local farmer has advised me that grain prices are set to rise again over the winter which will add to the problem. :(

Although horse feed does not attract VAT at the moment the industry costs associated with bringing your feed to you ie. fuel, packaging, business running costs are VATable so there will be another increase next year with the VAT rise. :mad:

Please bare in mind that your retailers profit on a sack of feed is on average just 50 pence :eek: which is not much considering the amount of work feed involves, humping sacks around, storage, wastage, time discussing requirements etc.

The best advice I can give at this time is look closely at your feed requirements. I have on average 60% of my customers feeding either far too much or the wrong type of feed for what their horse is doing. Get advice from the manufacturers, their numbers are found on the back of your feed sacks or look them up online. Shop around for the best deals - you might be surprised at the difference in prices from one retailer to the next as I know another retailer near me charges an extra £4 per bag on Happy Hoof than I do!:eek:

As WoofnWhinny says, prices are going up across the board. Our local supplier of straights has increased their prices substantially - and we now sell 25kg sacks of wheat, oats and barley at £6 instead of £4.80, although wrapped haylage has only increased by 25p.

For Dengie users, there is a sweetener on it's way, although it's not been offered to all retailers (preens slightly!) - Alfa A will have extra fill, up by 10%, these should be in the shops mid September.

It is worth asking for help when you buy - for instance, we sell Baileys No 4, but we also sell Baileys Hilight range, and the conditioning cubes in that range are £2.70 per bag cheaper, and the products are very similar.
 
Had the Spillers rep round last week and she said they had frozen prices till at least Jan. Only one other company has done this, thought she said Dodson and Horrell, but could be mistaken reading the last post(DandH have just taken over Blue Chip from them).
