Dental Care!!

Hi Guys,

Just asking for a bit of advice really, I took my 14year old dog to the vets yesterday to see about having her teeth cleaned as they are really smelly and brown and im woried they may turn nasty or get infected. anyway he checked her over and said her heart is amazingly good for her age and everything else is looking really healthy, she is still an idiot and thinks shes about 3!

for it to be done!! I no she needs it but was wandering if any of you no a dog dentist or somone else like that in cornwall that would be cheaper or if there were any products that would help?? any advice would be great!

I would be very cautious if they are intending to anesthetise her or even use sedation, it s not a good for a dog of that age. In the 10 years I have been feeding raw I have never had to have a dogs teeth cleaned even a 14 year old.

You may not feel like giving it a go but you could try a beef knuckle bone or one of those imitation chewy thingys before you take the step of having a big clean at the vet?
 
I agree with Karyn, at 14 to be honest a dog has really had its innings. It's great that your dog has been checked over and everything is still nice and healthy, but I wouldn't be doing anything drastic to a 14 year old dog, as they can turn the corner very suddenly. Having said that she could of course have another healthy 5 years ahead of her.

I would think it kinder to maintain her teeth with dental chews, but ask the vet about what sort as she probably has some gum disease and the harder ones could make her gums bleed.

By the time teeth are brown and stumpy it's generally too late, so worth using dental products from puppyhood. I must admit I use the chews rather than brushing, as this is so hard. Dried food also helps clean teeth and raw food like Karyn says would be ideal.
 
My 10 year old JRT has just had his teeth done. They were brown and his gums were starting to be affected. Once under they discovered that he needed a tooth removing

He is a lot better since this has been done. It cost just under £200
 
Im just woried that if I leave it her teeth could be the reason she gets ill and goes down hill, I did brush her teeth last night and they did bleed a bit but managed to get them a little cleaner than before. I think I will see what the vet thinks, and if he says she should would cope with being put under then I think I will go for it. the price is nothing really shes my little baby!! thanks for all the advice guys x
