horse going to vets tomorrow to be sedated for work with power tools.in all the years ive had horses never done this and im anxious.any experiences and any idea how long before i can drive her home
My old horse underwent major dental work with power tools for an offset jaw & incisors to be cut. It was fine - he was 19 at the time. Your horse will probably be sedated quite heavily for the work, it's probably more traumatic for us! My horse was fine once he came round from the sedative. He was on bute for a few days as he was a bit sore. It didn't stop him wanting to eat as soon as it was over though! Hope it goes ok.
I have to have my girl sedated every 3rd year to have a tooth ground down with the power rasp. The first time she was taken to the vets as he wanted to take x-rays too to see what the full picture was (I'd only bought her 2 months previous). All the work was done and she was cajoled up the ramp about 30 minutes after he'd done working on her.. a very scarey sight watching doped HW cob going up a ramp with a vet holding onto her tail, me on her head and a vet nurse with a broom head up her bum!). We then had to wait approx 30 minutes for her to come around enough to drive home. We figured when she started kicking the lorry she was ready for going. She travelled very well, and didn't seem overly bothered by the experience, which is amazing considering she is a natural born worrier.
I have since had her sedated and worked on at home, the worst bit is how heavy their head is when you have to hold it up for the vet to work on (vet is very nice and gives me a towel to pad my shoulder)....still heavy as heck though !
It'll be fine, mine have been done this way for 5 years without incident. I would reckon on an hour for them to come round from when they finish the work.
The horses are not bothered by it at all.
Catdragon, your vet should have a stand to rest her "chin" on, my vet does, OK its not foolproof as then tend to gradually move backwards, but it helps a lot.
