After my recent equine dentist needed in Notts post, I had quite a few PM's about David Waters, Heather Petcher, Patrick Gee and Marcus Fasey being recommended to me which was great - thank you.

But I have just looked on the BEVA website and non of their names appear on the list

Does this mean that they are not qualified?

Possibly. Using a name listed on the BEVA site ensures that the dentist is insured and has passed rigorous exams/training and they have to adhere to a code of conduct. Personally i wouldnt use an EDT not on the list

I don't know any of the dental technicians you mention, but I'm not from that area. The dental guy I have used for the last 10 years or more 'is not qualified', he hasn't sat exams & he appears on no websites. having said that he has looked after my horses for the last 10 years or so. He knows what he's doing & has a glowing reputation within the horse community around my area. He doesn't charge an absolute fortune either for his services.

Sometimes a wealth of experience is worth far more than having passed exams or got letters after your name.

QR- I think this is the conflicting thing about training to be a qualified and registered EDT. Things may have changed from when I looked into it a few years back but from what I recall you had to have done 500 horses and have evidence (photos/reports) to be eligible to sit the BEVA/BAEDT exam.

Therefore you had no choice but to work as unqualified and unregistered until you could sit the exam. This is what put me off as I wanted to train properly and then pass the examination and be qualified; I didn't want to be let loose without being qualified but I couldn't see anyway around it.

Like I said things may have changed now and I'm totally behind the times!

Yes, if they arent on the list they arent qualified.

There is a big necessity to regulate this industry and try to filter out those that are performing dentistry way out of their capabilities and understanding and that is why there is such a rigorous exam in order to become qualified. I would imagine less than 5% of EDTs are qualified (this is my average calculation!)

BEVA qualified EDTs are the only EDTs to be eligable to join the British Association of Equine Dental Technicians which is the only association that can act as a "regulatory body" ensuring that standards are kept very high with all EDTs adhering to a code of conduct.

I am not saying that all unqualified EDTs should be avoided (as we were all unqualified once upon a time) but when you see the messes some of the unqualifed EDTs make of horses mouthes and the owner is completely unaware of the mess they have made......it makes me very very cross.

My dentist isnt on the beva website - but is a certified dentist (trained in america) and is insured through NFU..

Dont think that just because they are not on the beva list they are not insured.

Anyone can get insurance. I could set up as a dentist and get insurance to practice tomorrow. Obviously it's better that anyone working on your horse is insured but it's not related to their qualifications. I found this out for myself after falling for an advert from an EDT saying they were "insured and qualified" so I looked into it further and it transpired that they weren't qualified (not on BEVA/BAEDT) and that any joe bloggs can get insurance.

You are v right TPO

lots of EDTs are putting "NFU approved" in their adverts giving clients a false sense of security. NFU are cracking down on this big style and anyone who uses the NFUs name to make it sound like an additional qualification or standard of work is higher will be leapt on by the NFU.

I know someone who went to Idaho to train for a week and came back and managed to get insurance from the NFU (for about 2k per year) and this only covered catagory 1 work (thank god!). Anyone can get it if they are willing to pay!!!

I am pretty sure Marcus Fasey was on the list? Perhaps he hasn't renewed his membership.
I used an Australian trained and registered dentist....never again. He disregarded a very serious problem in my mares mouth and caused her a further 6 months of suffering.
You have to be so careful.

to be BEVA you need 300 cases including 40 advanced cases, before you are even considered for the exam, then it is only a 2 day course,if you read th BEVA website it explains what you need to do,it can take years to get the cases together,it is not years of BEVA training, like victoria said you all have to start somwhere, just because people havnt got the letters after thier name it doesnt mean they are all bad dentists, nfu do insure dentists for cat 1 work up to 10 million if they want it,its not an anyone can get it insurance because you cant they do specialise in dentistry insurance along with all the other things the specialise in !!!

I don't think that statement is true.

Some people ARE qualified but don't want to be members any more.
