My WBxTB filly (rising 2) is being eaten alive by the biting midges despite being plastered twice daily in NAF Off gel, Fly Repellent Extra spray and various other anti-fly products.

She is very suseptible around her teats, hind upper inner thighs and along her under belly. The midges are stuck tight sucking whenever I go up and she's covered in lumps where they've bitten her and she's also a few sarccoid lumps developing under there too

. She's wearing her Rambo Sweetitch Hoody or her Rambo Fly Buster rug when out and I've also been feeding her FOUR scoops of Think Fly supplement too for the past 3 weeks.

Would Deosecting her once or twice a month be of any extra help?

We have extra large midges here and on veterinary advice I've been using cattle pour-on anti-insect stuff for several years, and my horses are much much happier as a result. I only have to do it twice a year (spring and mid summer).

I was looking at this stuff and wondering about it....

Swish

What products have you found to be okay and ACTUALLY work. PM me if you prefer, thanks!

I use youngs Flypor. It is licenced for cattle but has got exactly the same ingredients in as switch which is licenced for horses to treat sweetitch. The switch is £28 for 250ml and the flypor is the same money for 1 litre!!

I use it on all my horses and apply it for once a week for a month at the beginning of feb and then every two weeks for the fly and midge season. A bottle lasts ages and i only use 2 bottles in a season which keeps my 3 fly free! lol

This has changed my sweetitch sufferers life and she can now be unrugged all summer with no rubbing which is something that i never thought that i would see!

Also forgot to say that I use udder salve (for cattle) On her udder running along to her belly button. This is greasy and acts as a barrier to stop the midges biting and it also contains iodine which if they do get bitten then it stops the usual reaction and seems to soothe it instantly!

Hope that helps!

I use deosect, its pretty good as it is v strong smelling lol. Makes my grey come up in black splodges though so they become an appaloosa for about 10 minutes til' the spray soaks in haha xD

how about avon skin so soft oil body spray. works better than any horsey fly spray. works pretty well on my sweet itch mare i cover her and her boett rug in it

I'd go for Coopers over Deosect. My vet poured Deosect on my grey mare and it burnt her badly, you could see where it had run too with it being oil based.Skin and hair just sloughed away - really nasty!

I dont think any fly spray really works. We use deosect daily! and I dont recon it makes any difference to my home made sprays. Tried coopers too which I find a nightmare to apply, it would be much better as a spray. Best thing I bought was a fly mask, my boy grazes happily whilst the others are mithered by flys in there ears.
Interesting to hear about switch though

OMG. Silly vet. I'd have been hopping mad. You're supposed to dilute it, only 10ml measure of Deosect in 500ml water, and then bath it on all over using a sponge. Your poor mare. It must have hurt like hell. Bet she didn't have lice any more though

I got this last year for a pony who the vet thought had sweet itch and it was brilliant stuff, there were no flies of any kind near him- midges, horse flies, black flies nothing. It was really easy to use and much less hassle than putting lotion or sprays on him every day. He was still scratching though and it turned it he has a food allergy and not sweet itch, however if I ever had a horse with sweet itch I'd use this.

I got mine over in USA when I was on holiday but I'm sure you'd be able to order it online, I don't think it's available over here or in UK.

use normall fly spray on her eaten area use vasaline with tea tree in it and once every six weeks use a product from the vets called spot on it is for cows but horses can use it you pure it down the spine and then when a fly bites it kills the fly straight off so you are killing the fly population aswell as protection your horse!
