My new 2yo pony has lice! Argh!

We only have two ponies here, I’m guessing they both need treating?

I’ve bought deosect- how best to use it?

They are currently very fluffy and dirty, so they need to be clipped for it to be effective?

Can I just spray on to a long coat or will that not be enough?

Any advice about how best to use deosect hugely appreciated, thank you!

I have never had to clip, and a horse I bought in was covered in what looked like white snow, only it moved. If you stand them in the sun the blighters tend to leave the skin because its to warm for them. If you use a cloth glove over rubber glove you can rub it in to the coat, and they are not shying away from spray and smell. It has some residual effect as the carrier is oily, or it was the cast time I bought some, but you will need to repeat the treatment. The forelock is a good hiding place for them. I use Inderex on rugs, as just in case treatment

I applied with a sponge to get through a thick coat to the skin.

Well, I did that after I tried spraying it and it was like a bioweapon. Gloves and long sleeves, face mask and proper safety goggles if you're spraying.

I patch tested with no reaction but it did really dry out my mares skin and she was itchy and scurfy after so just be aware of that too. It is very strong and nasty stuff!

I used a sponge too and it worked well, even though the pony had a full shetland winter coat. You don't have to soak them, just give it a good rub in, then repeat when it says on the bottle. It's also a good idea to treat any wood that's in their surroundings. I sprayed a disinfectant, in a knapsack, all over the stable.

I’ve recently done my lot as a yearling had some uninvited guests 🤢

I used a small tub and small sponge and applied to base of mane and tail, down their top line and across shoulder blade.

It needs to get to the skin for best absorption

Sponge not spray, it's not good to breathe in! Follow the instructions carefully, it's strong stuff. Treat both and then again in a couple of weeks.

Well I did spray! I diluted it as per instructions and sprayed it with gloves and a mask outdoors, I used a sponge round the face and eyes etc. You need to do 2 treatments though 2 weeks apart. I treated both horses that were turned out together in case…

You also need to spray rugs/blankets and disinfect grooming brushes, saddle pads, etc everything that has touched the horse. I also bought some lice powder that is safe if they eat it and did the stable too! Ideally change bedding if you can.

2 sprays 2 weeks apart and it got rid of it on mine x

Really carefully read the directions as I once overdose daughter’s pony, because I’m an idiot.

Other than that it’s super easy to use, pour on and dab in with a sponge.
