Hello

Has anyone taken the route of Depo provera for their mares in season? And if so, could you please tell me your thoughts on it to alleviate the hormonal effects on your mare and her season!?

My loan mare has very odd behaviour when in season, and really seems to suffer with them. She mouths a lot, and is very foal like, turns very submissive and generally struggles for a few days to function properly. We have discussed it with the vet, and she said her behaviour is very extreme and quite rare, but some of the symptoms she has are normal, just rather exaggerated. She also suggested various options to take, including the supplements, the marble and Depo provera.

I've tried her with agnus castus, no change over two months (6 seasons in that time). Seeing as that is the main ingredient for most of the branded makes, we haven't tried any of them.

So, depo provera- how did it work for your mare?
Were there any side effects?
Did her behaviour change much and how?
Costs??

Thanks

Eta- ReguMate not an option, funding doesn't extend that far

My saddler first mentioned it and said it worked wonders for her mare, but there is a lot of very conflicting information and studies online about it.
I am phoning the vet Monday to see if someone is able to discuss it with me. They're all very knowledgeable, and know the mare and her behaviour.

Did you discuss Improvac injections with the vet? Not licensed for horses in this county yet (It is in NZ with the name 'Equity') but my vet has used it on a few horses with success.

My mare is marbled (as I have a stallion and don't want any accidents) and she is the sweetest, most level mare I have ever met. I would thoroughly recommend it :)

I had this injected three times for a previous horse as I was told he was a false rig and other than be on box rest for teh rest of his life, in order to allow him to be turned out with the others who he was accused of attacking he was given this injection. It was unlicensed for use in horses in 1997 so I had to sign a disclaimer. It turned out it wasn't him that had been attacking the other horses in the end, I was at a show when my so called friends horse was injured again in the field so my horse was exonerated.

By this point I was so upset that my horse had been accused, and had had to stay on forced box rest for months by the YO that I left the yard.

Some six months later he died of a suspected heart attack and I was not unconvinced that this had led to his demise. I would not touch it again for any horse. That was just my experience. I was told that because my horse had been gelded late he was more likely to have a heart attack but still remain convinced it was the depo provera injections he was given.
