Deposit and/or month in advance?

When I spoke to a DIY yard, they wanted a non-refundable deposit of £100 in advance to reserve stable, and would then just take this off your first months livery. I guess that protects them should you choose to drop out. They have then not lost out on a huge sum of money from someone who would have taken the space, and can then replace you. Think it is not uncommon to ask for a deposit and then to deduct this from first bill.

I don't do DIY (although some people with many horses do Field Rental), I have a full care facility and I don't ask for deposits. All charges, for field rental and full care livery, are paid monthly in advance.

I'm on a Part Livery Basis and i paid a £100 'bond' money to them initially, which is two weeks livery for me. If i were to leave i have to give
2 weeks notice and i've in effect already paid for my final two weeks at the yard.

We also are asked to pay by SO on either a weekly/fortnightly/monthly basis, whichever suits. Any 'extra's during the course of the week are
paid for the week after.

Think I've done every combination, including paying a month's livery as a deposit plus a month in advance. That worked out at around £750 for DIY 3 horses.
More often I've been asked for a deposit to hold the place which is refunded from the first months livery, with the livery paid in advance.

Some yards still work by paying monthly bills in arrears, which surprises me as they not infrequently find people doing a flit without paying. Losing the money for 5/6 horses is quite a loss.

I'm on a yard where you pay in advance for the month. I've been on a yard where you paid weekly and one where you just paid at end of each month - no deposit etc required.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I've look round a couple of yards recently and they all require different deposits/monthly payments so was just wondering what the 'norm' was.

What were you specifically looking for with regards to paying livery? It is pretty standard to pay upfront for most things.

I'm used to paying month in advance for DIY livery. Some yards requested month in advance as well as deposit on top - which is fine - just wondered what everyone else did!

Ah, yes some places do ask for a deposit as well. I don't get that logic tbh; paying monthly in advance is enough.

I think the deposit as well as the month in advance covers the YM in the instance where a client gets to the 28th of the month and tells the YM that they are leaving in 2 days time. Therefore they are not paying for the next month and the YM won't have time to advertise the stable.

I pay a monthly - in advance for livery and in arrears for haylage / bedding if I use it. I haven't paid a deposit.

I've always paid a month up front, and then paid rent in advance . . . current yard required no deposit, however (although we still pay in advance).

We do this. We ask for livery payable for the month in advance but we also take a small damage deposit which is returned if no damage. We are happy to cover fencing and general maintenance but just lately we've had a run of horses kicking holes in the ply boards in the stables then liveries moving on so its really to cover that.
