does anybody else weigh more than they look? i know this is a strange question, but i am 5ft 2, and i weigh 12 stone....yet wear size 10-12 clothes. im always panicking that i am too big for my mare, who is 15.2hh and quite lightweight (see siggy)...but everyone tells me i am fine on her. i eat well, exercise every day (riding, mucking out, walking - general horse stuff!) and occasionally go to the gym, but still i stay the same. its just starting to get me down, and i wondered if anyone else has the same problem?

You are definately not too big for her, dont worry about your weight you not 'fat' so it doesnt matter, im an inch taller than you, weight less but take bigger clothes. My weight never changes, I can starve myelf for a week, and only lose about 1 pound (yes i have tried) or i can stuff myself, and although i feel crap i dont put much on, is it just the way I think.

Im a similar size and weight, 5ft 3/4 and bout 11 stone 10 last time i weighed myself but i wear a size 14, sometimes even a 16 depending on the shop!! I had a 15.1 1/2 tb and i never worried about being to heavy!! I now have a 1/2 id whos 16.1hh so def dont need to worry.
I also eat resonably healthy and ride nearly every day etc and the only way i loose weight is to stop eating chocolate or anything tasty and go to the gym nearly every day!! I sometimes get quite down about my weight, but i give myself a mental kick up the backside and tell myself life is for living not just sweating on a treadmill whilst eating a salad!! Theres more to life than weight!! (However i would love to wear a size 10-12!!!!!!)
From your signature your horse is more than capable of carrying your weight, if it was struggling it wouldnt be jumping the height it is for you so i wouldnt worry!!!

I'm the same, I'm 5ft 3 and a size 8-10, but weight 10 1/2 stone! I think I just have lead bones! Muscle weight much more than fat apparently, and having denser heavier bones should reduce risk of osteoperosis (sp?). I'm sure you're not too big for your horse, although I can sympathise as I worry exactly the same things, and no matter what I do I always stay the same!

It doesn't look to bother your horse anyway!!

Don't worry about it, if you are fit and healthy and have a happy horse thats all that matters.

I'm the other way to you - I think I look to weight more than I do! Your way round is better!

Dont worry - I have been on steroids for ages now and have put alot of weight on but god I am 5ft 2 and weigh 9stone 7/8 and am a good solid 12 - you are a lucky girl!!

Sod it - I ride a 13.3 so dont worry !!

What are you made of lead???

You look a size ten - you must have a lot of muscle and little fat so sod it - keep going as you are!!

Even size 8's have their bad days I am sure - I know i did when I was a size 8 - ahh happy days !!

And you will always be safe in the knowledge that everyone has a fat arse in jods!!!! LOL

You certainly dont look big! Fab pictures by the way.

I also struggle with my weight and crash diet to a size 10 then gradually get back to a 14 - very depressing when I cant get into my nice jacket. back on the diet again which is going well (ciggie consumption gone up however, but wine gone down...not sure which is better) . Hoping to get back to size 10 again before xmas....why is it that husbands seem to eat anything they like and dont put on a pound!!

If your mare has 8 inches of bone, you are fine!

The rule of thumb is that a horse with 8 inches of bone can carry up to a maximum of 13 stone (that's including saddle, rider's heavy boots, clothing, etc - so does not mean a 13-stone rider, but at 12 stone unless your saddle and clothing are very heavy, you should be fine).

Sounds as though you are not fat at all, btw, just very fit and muscled!

Be thankful you are healthy. Because of a beastly chronic and incurable illness, I have the opposite problem - I'm 5ft5 and weigh 6 stone. Believe me, this does not mean 'glamorously slim' - more like 'unattractively scrawny'!

Rushes off to measure how many inches of bone George has!!

I am 5ft 4" and weigh nearly 12 stone but am also a size 12?? At times it gets me down and although George is 16.3 I wonder if I'm hindering him, he is quite unbalanced and I'm not that well balanced / coordinated, but every time I think about dieting I think WHY?!

Think everyone should stop worrying - horses are pretty hardy creatures!! And noone should be worrying about their weight unless they are medically putting themselves at risk. Life is too short and tbh, even thin people have their bad days. Sometimes i look in the mirror, esp in natural light, look at my arse and thing jesus, celulite heaven, and i have got celulite. But, i eat healthily, go the the gym 1/2 times a week, ride twice a week and i'm a size 8/10. It makes no difference what size you are, so don't bother trying to force yourself to be something you are naturally not. Life's too short, enjoy being healthy. htobago, i echo you and sympathise. Health is more important, and it really isn't worth worrying about being too heavy for your horse - i'm sure they'd let you know.

im 5ft 5/6 and size 8-10, and weigh around 9 stone, and whilst i know that is not heavy at all everyone is always really suprised when i tell them. They always think i weigh less. But its all muscle

muscle weighs much more than fat... so being horsey, and doing jobs around the stables you will have good muscles.. so it wont be fat

from looking at your sig, you look the perfect size for your mare and you are no way to heavy for her! as M_B said... im sure she would let you know. (she looks gorg in your pics btw)
you sound like your fit and healthy and do pleanty of exercise! so you have no need to worry

You look just fine, Georgie!

I am about 17 stone at the moment, and was really despairing of losing weight despite going to the gym. BUT I have actually lost half a stone since I started! We eat all the right kind of stuff, but the thing that has really helped is reducing our portion size with meals. Which is hard, as I love my food

For me, the other thing that has helped a lot is deciding to get back into horses. I was lucky enough to find a riding school that would take me, and have been riding there for 3 weeks now. I want to lose some more weight, and get my own horse, so I have decided that I can start looking when I get to under 16 stone, and have a long term target of 14 stone. So now I have a reason to go to the gym!

To be honest, the exercise from looking after your own horse probably helps a lot (I don't have that

), and riding is pretty good exercise too. I found a chart somewhere that reckoned half an hour of trot used up over 300 calories. Also, remember that it's a lot easier for your horse to carry you as you know how to ride and are in balance with the horse. It might be different if you were a beginner, but you're not.

Anyway, let's all try not to worry too much about it. Just do loads of mucking out! Oh, and my other tip is get a really good set of non stick pans to cook with, I don't need to use any oil most of the time when cooking.

you guys dont realise how much better you have made me feel....iv been pretty tearful reading some of your lovely comments, because this is something that has plagued me ever since i can remember....maybe i should just stop worrying and enjoy life, as you say: i dont feel unhealthy, and, as long as my horse is fine (which she seems to be!) then i am happy!

thank you all
