I have posted on here about this before but feeling a bit down about it all today. Pony went lame end of june but was not looking quite right before that. So had a lameness work up and veet recommended an MRI, the diagnosis was
DDFT damage and associated navicular bursitis of the right hind
Bilateral desmitis of the collateral ligaments of the DIP joint
Bilateral navicular disease
The ddft damage is considered to be the most significant cause of lameness.

He has had cartrophen and tildren and rest but not box, he started walk work in hand and has been doing about twenty minutes ridden walk work for the last few weeks. He seems to bit quite capable of bucking and spooking and as the nights are now dark the vet has said turn him away until after Christmas and then we will reassess as he is not actually walking while i am riding him he just jogs and jumps about. He still seems to rest the legs quite a lot and especially the right hind. I so want him to come right, but i have this sinking feeling in my stomach that its not going to happen, sorry to rant on just feeling sorry for myself tonight.

So sorry to hear about your pony. Vet's advice to turn away until later sounds good, I did a similar thing with my old mare last year, turned her away for 9 months (actually thought I was retiring her!) one day I noticed she was sound. She has been lightly hacked throughout the summer and only has problems when she hoons about the field (she's 25!) which results in a day or 2 box rest and then she is fine. Fingers crossed for your pony :)

Aaah, have a big hug. ((( )))

There is quite a lot going on in his leg, lots to heal and you are doing all you can to speed things up, but the main thing is always time. Annoying, but do as you are doing and be patient, and hopefully things will brighten up. I have had several with similar problems and they have all come back into work eventually. One pony had quite serious DDFT problems (went down a pot hole) - it took a year all told.

I did all the box rest etc and brought him back into work after 6 months and it swelled up and had heat in it after only a few days, so I lent him to a friend as a companion pony and he was turned out for 6 months and basically ignored - he came back sound and has never had a problem. I had expected too much too soon - it just needed more time.

This time of year is miserable enough anyway, without a horse being lame.

Can you ask a friend to go for a ride on their to cheer yourself up?

Thanks, have got another two to ride which is great but i love riding my boy and i miss it! but you are right, time is the thing which he needs, I wont give up hope until we have done a year at least, we cannot turn out 24/7 on our yard in the winter and also think thats a bit tough when he is use to the stable at night at this time of year and he is 15 so want to spoil him! I need to be patient!

My sisters did a year of rest and walking then went mad in field and was hopping lame so back to square one. Had surgery in Feb and is finally back to canter work. He is moving better and is really well, but it has been a 2yr slot. Don't give up! When I tore tendons myself it took years to get back to normal so I try to remember that now I'm facing an injury to my little horse. Good luck with him.
