I'm a bit worried about my Ellie at the moment. She just isn't herself. She just seems completely fed up, uninterested and whiney.

She's reminding me of what she was like after our puppy Jed was PTS at christmas. She's not been getting as many walks as she should get at the moment due to us all being poorly so maybe that is a factor although she's been like it a few weeks now.

She's starting to upset me and I'm at my wits end what to do with her! Help!!

Play with her more, make more of an effort.... alos if you all have been poorly that = u being slightly depressed (understandably) but dogs pick up on this, and this can thereby alter their mental state as well

so try perking up a bit when around her and make a big fuss and see if this makes any difference...... if not..... maybe go to the vet and get her checked out to eradicate any chance of a medical issue!

She just isn't interested in playing, and if she does start playing she soon runs in because she hears a neighbours dog start barking and she's scared.

She usually gets really excited when she was tryinher if she wants to go in the garden. She leaps about in backwards circles making daft noises, but just lately she just ambles up to the back door.

In fact the only time I've seen her excited in the last week or so is today when she was trying to dig under the fence into next doors garden....and hten I felt mean because I had to stop her and she did her kicked puppy face at me and came back to her bed to sulk.

maybe play in the house for a little bit then run outside like AHH yey lets play out here! and see if that works?

if she is still really depressed then i would take her to vets

if she is scared of neighbours dog has hse had a bad experience with it?! as that might have something to do with it!

Oh she has on going fear issues with other dogs but is 100% better than she was when we first got her. She's learning that other dos can be nice! She doesn't want to play inside either. I've tried getting her excited and making a big fuss but she just isn't interest.

Mum had a heart attack the other day. Thought she was almost dead as she called and called and called her with no response and then she didn't move for ages even when mum went over to her. No normally she is the sort of dog who you call once and she is there, waggy tail, singing at you!

Nope not her season. We did suspect she was going to come into season as she does get a bit groggy but nope no season.

I can vouch for the fact that your dog will pick up your "moods". It happened to my Lab when I went through a very difficult period of stress and worry. I really tried to keep everything normal for her but she knew. I took her to the vet but soory I can't remember what he did. I do know it gave me a "kick start" to lighten up.

goya - slapped you across the head with a happy stick?!

It is amazing though how much dogs pick up off peoples moods! although mine still doesnt get the hint when its time to sit still and chill out! (damn it!)

I'm clutching at straws here now but I'm trying to think of any little reason she maybe feeling unhappy.

Change of food recently?

Maybe she's jealous of the orphan kittens needing a lot of attention?

Sickness in the family - Sister getting epilepsy, me and bro pig flu?

Family problems - Mum and OH arguing, Me and Mum arguing, Kids and mum arguing?? (THink I may have found the answer. Get rid of mother!)

When was she last in season? Could she be having a false pregnancy as you say she has been digging?

ETS Having read your posts again you say she has been like this for a few weeks so false pregnancy unlikely. Is she eating and drinking okay? I think in your shoes I might just get her checked out by the vets in case there is an underlying medical problem.

She was last in season 6- 8 weeks ago. Since you mentioned phantom pregnancy me and my bro both noticed just before I read your post that she seems...well bigger in the boob department and sleeps a lot. I have a cat that pretends she is a puppy and tries to suckle from her, would that make her boobies grow?!

If she was in season 6 - 8 weeks ago it could well be a phantom then, presume there is no chance she could really be in whelp

Unfortunately this is also the time scale for a pyometra to be brewing. Is she drinking any more than normal? Perhaps just keep an eye on her over the weekend and have a word with your vet on Monday, however if she does start drinking excessively, has a discharge from the vulva or generally seems unwell you should call your vet.

No she isn't drinking more than normal and she is eating fine too. Just been out digging again which is another thing she doesn't normally do and has been asleep on her bed pretty much all day. Also no we are talking along the lines of phantom pregnancy, she has been acting a bit strange with her bed, didn't think much of it until phantom pregnancy was mentioned but its almost as though she is nesting. Normally she just plonks herself down!

I'll keep an eye on her next couple of days and see if she improves. If she doesn't then I'll get her to the vet monday.

Thanks for the help.

Does sound like a phantom then if she is digging and nesting in her bed. Is she taking toys into her bed or anything? One of mine used to collect apples out of the garden and line them up in her bed when she had a phantom, bles her. She has now been spayed!

No she isn't collecting things and she isn't really fussed by toys at the moment. She loves kittens though and does sometimes try to pick them up but gets scared when they squeek at her and drops them again. And as I say, she has adopted one of our young cats and has been letting her suckle from her for a good 6 months or so and I'm not sure if that has anything to do with her suddenly growing boobies!

How do they treat phantom pregnacy then, just assuming that is what is going on??

In my experience the only time they need treating is if they start producing quite a bit of milk. I have had 2 that suffered from them, one never progressed beyong gathering apples, the other had a little milk but not enough to be a problem. Hopefully in a few days time her body will think she has "had the pups" and she should get back to normal. Give her a couple of days and then start encouraging her to play and hopefully she will forget about it, but as said before, if you are worried just phone your vet and ask his advice.
