My lovely 5yo has thrown a splint, i am gutted and probably over reacting, its just so annoying!

Shes not been lame and there's never been any heat or tenderness around it but there it is sticking out of the side of her lovely dainty legs like a sore thumb.

I'm not sure how shes done it, but there was a little cut there in the winter, just a tiny little scab about the size of a little finger nail but gradually this splint has appeared so i guess it must have been quite a knock.

I'm just gutted . . . i try to do the right sort of work to strengthen her legs without causing concussion, i boot when appropriate but dont over boot or bandage so she has nice strong legs, work her on a mixtures of surfaces - but there it is.

Now trying to decide what to do, give it a bash with splint ex or just ignore it. My other horse got one at the same age but she was being a tit for weeks on the road leaping up and down so i wasn't surprised when she threw one but 3 years later is 90% gone so hoping this will do the same.

Just a vent really . . .

Had splintgate last year despite doing everything 'right'. No lameness either. It's just sod's law sometimes. I used Ice Vibe boots 3 x a day on it and Compagel twice a day and just walked for 4 weeks in school and then introduced hacking at walk. Had it xrayed just to make sure nothing more sinister.

Put back start of BE season to July last year but it has almost disappeared now a year later.

Our IDx mare came with 2 splints as a 3yo, god knows what she had been doing to get them as she was only backed.

Thankfully they don't cause any problems.

LO's pony was lame a few weeks ago with a bang to his old splint, but on x-ray its not just a splint but a previously broken splint bone, so only to be expected thats its a bit more fragile I suppose...

Both of my 7yr olds have splints one on each front leg so a matching pair of sorts. One was before I bought her the other I don't know I just noticed it one day when I clipped her and hadn't before. Neither went lame with them and I rarely notice them now. (In fact clipped Daisy today and didn't notice it).

My 10yr old Warmblood has just given himself a lovely big splint on his near fore by knocking it hooning in the field. It was still sensitive to touch after a couple of weeks so vet X-Ray'd to rule out a fractured or broken splint bone. Came up clean so now we've got two weeks of box rest and DSMO application to get through.

Can totally sympathise, my soon-to-be-5-year old threw a splint a couple of months ago (he's a bit of a loon in the field so I think he knocked himself). No lameness but he's still a bit reactive when I poke and prod but my vet's checked it and doesn't think there's any need to xray. I'm gutted too but hoping it will go with time (one of my mares had a mahoosive splint as a youngster but it's barely noticeable now).

i have a just turned 4 yr old who sustained an injury at our old yard (no one bothered to let me know either) was on livery, it's still here now not caused her any lameness or heat but it's there and ughhh i am hoping and praying it goes on its on accord seeing as she is still very young.
i have a vet coming this week to give her a health check before i start her breaking in i just wanted to make sure it will not make anythng worse.
