I might be moving to Derby next summer, and so have been busying myself trying to find livery yards and nice places to live. As obviously the livery yard comes first!

I don't know the area at all, but most people are saying Matlock is a lovely place to go to with good train links.

Does anyone from Derby reccomend a livery yard or area in particular? I have done a google search but not many places are coming up.

Hi I'm from Derby and live in Belper now. So feel free to PM me if you want to chat about areas.

If you will be living in the city there are a few nice close yards. Barleyfields at Etwall is a good RS with livery and competitions. There are a few yards in that area, Highfields does DIY.

There are a couple of yards in Chellaston/aston/weston.

There is an excellent yard at Elvaston - Riverside, I know the owners and they are great, one is an EDT and BHSAI, the other a BHSI.

Matlock Bath is popular with bikers - that might be what people are on about, it is an old spa town that is the closest that we get to the sea side round us. It can be a bit chavvy though. Bear in mind that Matlock is quite a drive from the city, if you plan to work in town I wouldn't live that far out.

Denby Village and around there is very pretty and very (very!) horse orientated!

To the west of Derby is Etwall, which has Hargate Equestrian Centre, and Barleyfields. Above Derby is Eland Lodge - livery, cross country course, massive manage, lovely shop and good coffee!

. Nice villages that neck of the wood as well (look on the map, one of the villages is Draycott-in-the-Clay).

Between Derby and Nottingham there is Ockbrook, Draycott, Borrowash, Elvaston (not Alvaston). There are a number of livery yards around, it depends on what facilities you want

PM me if you want.

I used to work in Matlock and absolutely hated the place, was so relieved when work moved up to Chesterfield! Sorry that doesn't really help you at all. All the places I know are too far out from Derby for your needs!

Hargate is in Hilton not Etwall (I live 1/2 mile away so should know).
Eland is south west of Derby, nor north. I keep my horse there. I chose Eland over Hargate for a variety of very good reasons!

Geography was never my strong point

Etwall is fairly close to Hilton isn't it? Hubby thinks I'm barking mad for putting EL as north of Derby... I blame the pig flu!

Yup, I can imagine the reasons for going to EL over H

This is a very useful forum... I am expecting to move to Derby in the next few months and should like to find somewhere close by to keep my horse, Chico. I am just a happy hacker and she is a sweetie. Ideal would be a shared livery yard (had one in High Wycombe and am still firm friends with the others) or a livery yard which does DIY with help if required. Currently I keep Chico at a friend’s farm in Lincolnshire, there are other liveries and one is a peripatetic groom so that answers all my problems. I am about to retire but I am not geriatric!! I have been one of the entry secretaries for Tetton Hall Event in Cheshire (where I also lived) for many years so can get some good refs if required. If anyone knows of a yard to rent and would consider sharing let me know...

I live South of Derby (near Swadlincote) but work in Derby, on a lovely yard very close to home - there are some very good yards all round Derby, Eland is fab, not too keen on the others for a variety of reasons - my parents live ust outside matlock, and it's a stunning area, but not sure i'd like the roadwork up there - far too many bikers for my liking (nothing against them by the way!) Seems we number more than i thought in this area, so one of us should be able to help you! I guess it depends on where you will be working, and what you want from where you'l be living, then maybe we can help accordingly!

Hi, I lived in Matlock and had my horses there for 3years. Would not recommend the area for horses. Very difficult hacking, very bad tarmac, for some reason why the local council does not put much stone down, so usually very slippery everywhere, which does not help with all the tremendous hills. Lots of bikers, dog eat dog attitude from the locals. Even noticed at local shows how people had a rougher attitude to the horses.

Live back in Derby now. Would honestly say the best riding areas around are on the Ticknall, Melborne, Ingleby side. More bridle paths in that area than the rest of Derbyshire, lots of livery yards, but cant personally say what any of them are like, but think most of them appear to be decent, not rough.

The other area which a lot of people would probably recommend is the Mapperley (Notts side of Derby) area. Its next to Shipley country park, where you can freely ride endless paths, woods, tracks, open fields and easily do circular rides of up to about 9miles.

Think it depends what you want to do. If you want to compete, would say probably Eland Lodge is the best all round yard, may be a bit expensive, but has a high standard of competition/training.

Hello all!

Sorry I took so long to reply to this, I got quite scared/confused!

Ok so we looked, my OH will be working in Derby (and me hopefully in notts) so we would like to commute via train, so somewhere with good train links. I don't want to live in Derby itself, and ideally stay as far from notts as possible (no offence!).

We have been looking at the village Belper as lots of people seem to like it.

But thanks for the livery yard names! I'll definately be looking into them, I just have never heard of any of them before!!

Would be looking at a yard with good facilities (a school), but not too big or competition-y because I don't like the atmosphere you get with such places. Ideally 24/7 turnout in summer, but if not then daytime turnout is a must, even in winter (apart from the odd week due to weather etc).

Lots of yards around Belper.Horsley, Heanor etc and even going further towards Nottingham. if you looking at between the two cities loads of choice with about 20 mins drive tops.

Maybe once you know where your going we can help more.

Summerleft - we are wanting to find a livery yard first as we don't have a clue where to live. All we know is OH is working in Derby centre.

If we choose a nice house and put a deposit down, we might find out the nearest yard is miles away and not very good. So it's easier to narrow it down to good 'areas' round Derby.

Are they advertised in yellow pages? Or on BHS site? A google search doesn't bring anything up.
