I have one homemade kennel at home for the two dogs with no run (as they only sleep in it at night), but I am thinking of moving this one and putting up another two dog kennel beside it and providing a run (one open one or two smaller ones side by side).

If you have kennels of your own can you tell me:-

Are they wooden, do they have wooden or concrete floors?

What are the measurements for the kennel and for how many dogs?

How do you clean them out? Do they have sloping floors that run to a drain so that you can pressure wash them?

Do the dogs sleep on raised platforms and what bedding do you use (in the whole kennel or just on the platform or bed?)

Are your runs completely enclosed (ie wire cover over the top) and what wire is it?

Do the runs have a concrete base and what are the measurements of your run for how many dogs?

Does anyone use self waterers?

I have been on loads of Kennel supplier websites but can't for the life of me find any internal details!

Sorry for so many questions

KENNELS ARE MADE FROM THE LIGHT BREEZE BLOCKS THAT RETAIN HEAT, CANNOT REMEMBER THE NAME AND THE FLOORS PLYBOARD.

What are the measurements for the kennel and for how many dogs?

OUTSIDE RUN IS ABOUT 15FT LONG AND 8FT WIDE, KENNEL IS ABOUT 4FT WIDE AND 10FT LONF, THIS WAS FOR MORE DOGS BUT HAS BEEN KNOCKED INTO ONE BIG ON FOR 2 DOGS

How do you clean them out? Do they have sloping floors that run to a drain so that you can pressure wash them?

THE CONCRETE KENNEL FLOOR IS SLOAPING.

Do the dogs sleep on raised platforms and what bedding do you use (in the whole kennel or just on the platform or bed?)

NO RAISED PLATFROM, I USE A TYPE OF JIFFY CLOTH MATERIAL IT COMES IN HUGE BAGS IN STRIPS.
NO RAISED PLATFORM ALL ONE LEVEL.

Are your runs completely enclosed (ie wire cover over the top) and what wire is it?

WOOD PLANTS TO ABOUT 3 FT THEN MESH FOR A FURTHER 4FT, BUT IT'S COVERED IN IVY

SO HARD TO SEE, NO ROOF.

Do the runs have a concrete base and what are the measurements of your run for how many dogs?

MEASUREMENTS AS ABOVE, FOR 2 LARGE DOGS, CONCRETE BASE.

Does anyone use self waterers?

NOPE, HAVE A WATER TAP VERY CLOSE

We are planning knocking these down to rebulid them out of wood, to resemble my cattery.

Thanks for that Cala - very interesting. I hadn't thought about using breeze blocks but not sure if I would need planning for a more "substantial" building whereas if they are wooden I think you can get away with it as they aren't permanent.

The kennel I have now, which the dogs love, is not easy to clean out and so was trying to sound out some ideas to make a new one more practical.

My son is designing some as we speak!!

Slabs

What are the measurements for the kennel and for how many dogs?
8'x8', two pens, one dog each.

How do you clean them out? Do they have sloping floors that run to a drain so that you can pressure wash them?
Sluice with water/brush every day, Jeyes fluid every week or so. No. but our old ones did.

Do the dogs sleep on raised platforms and what bedding do you use (in the whole kennel or just on the platform or bed?)
1-police standard box each, one with rubber matting, metal, one large plastic, no floor covering, Vetbed in cold weather.

Are your runs completely enclosed (ie wire cover over the top) and what wire is it?
Galvanised mesh panels at sides and corrugated iron roof.

Do the runs have a concrete base and what are the measurements of your run for how many dogs?
They are runs

Does anyone use self waterers?
No

I used a local one and to be frank they were crap and my small female's one is held together with cable ties as she has managed to bust the mesh away from the main frame.

WOODEN KENNELS AND FLOOR, CONCRETE RUNS.

What are the measurements for the kennel and for how many dogs?

EACH KENNEL IS 3 FOOT BY 2 FOOT AND FULL HEIGHT SO THAT WE CAN STAND UP IN THEM. THEY ALL HAVE FULL DOORS AT THE FRONT AND BACK A POP HOLE ON THE FRONT DOOR OUT INTO THE 10 FOOT RUN.

How do you clean them out? Do they have sloping floors that run to a drain so that you can pressure wash them?

BRUSH AND DISINFECTANT. NO DRAIN BUT DRAINS ONTO WILDERNESS GARDEN.

Do the dogs sleep on raised platforms and what bedding do you use (in the whole kennel or just on the platform or bed?)

KENNEL FLOORS ARE RAISED SLIGHTLY. PLASTIC DOG BASKETS IN KENNEL WITH QUILT OR BLANKET BEDDING.

Are your runs completely enclosed (ie wire cover over the top) and what wire is it?

CORRUGATED PLASTIC ROOF AND TWIWELD WIRE UP TO IT - ABOUT 6 FOOT.

Do the runs have a concrete base and what are the measurements of your run for how many dogs?

EACH KENNEL HAS A RUN 3 FOOT BY 10 FOOT FOR ONE DOG IN EACH.

Does anyone use self waterers?

NO - THE DOGS WOULD PROBABLY KILL THEM.

These are ours:
http://www.mittonhallkennelsystems.com/C...&p_i=366491

However, we train gun dogs for a living so needed a large, robust kennel unit...!!

We usually have 2 dogs sharing one run, or three if they are small. Our model has four runs.

We don't use any bedding in these kennels, at the back of each run there is a 'box' for them to go in and out of.

The kennels are on a concrete base which slopes slightly to the back. We pressure wash and disinfect twice a day. (If you intend to pressure wash regularly I'd avoid wood if you can help it - the wood will eventually rot, will be chewed by many dogs and also holds bacteria that the plastic cannot.

We also have an indoor kennel block which is a stable with kennel partitions. We only use these if it's really cold, we have persisting rain, or we have a very noisy dog in for training as we can shut the top stable door (fussy, whinging neighbours...).
If the dogs go into the indoor block they have bedmax shavings on the concrete floor.

We don't have automatic waterers for any of our kennels but have a tap very close by. We have got some bowl holders in a few of the kennels for the messy ones...!!

QR: Thank you for your answers, it gives me some ideas.

Amarillo - what fantastic kennels, I bet your set up is superb

Thank you Ravenwood!

It is brill to have them, especially when showing clients around but as I said, we had to have something good due to it being our livelihood...!!

Even having said that, I would whole-heartedly recommend them to anyone!!

Good luck with your kennels!
