Surely, it must be incredibly painful. (But we are grateful for his sacrifice).

Any chaps on here care to comment? Is he brave with a high pain threshold, or just stupid?!

Horse doesn't have a particularly prominent wither, he's using his knees to provide a degree of lift and prevent himself going forward too far and he makes sure he has a good jumping position so no, not too painfull.
I used to jump bareback (fully clothed) a lot back when bareback comps were common and never sustained injury. A couple of layers of thin cotton does not provide any protection, a good position and strong thighs does. ;)
