I have recently been jumping my horse in the outdoor arena which is quite deep and ive had a woman on the yard say to me that she would never jump in it ever as it will cause serious tendon problems, the woman is a big of a drama queen ect, but i just want to be sure.

So would you jump in a deep surface and is it definatly safe for their tendons ect?????

No idea about tendon damage, but if it is very deep I wouldn't, as they can more easily skid and trip I think? I've heard of bad things happening while jumping in very deep surface, so I always play it safe :o xx

Avoid jumping in a deep surface if possible, it does put extra strain on their legs, yes. How serious the problems can be, I don't know, but I don't jump in our school unless I absolutely have to and it's rained recently (watering deep schools often helps a lot, especially if they're sand) because the going is a tad deep.

But of course, it depends on how much you're jumping, how high, the horse etc etc :)

How deep is deep. Deeper than the going at a jump meet can be, deeper than the going out hunting? Or just deeper than you might like a school to be? What is the surface made of?

I wouldn't worry too much.. some people are just drama queens. They won't jump their horses in deep school, won't turn out in rain, won't trot on a hack, won't do this and won't do that.. you get what I'm trying to say!!!

Just don't overdo it or wack them up too high and if it gets so deep that you can't see your foot or you struggle to walk in it I wouldn't ride in it at all

I jumped today on the grass, most people would knock me down for this on the HORROR! hard ground but then I think.. I'm not jumping high, there is a good covering of grass and I always did competitions on grass during summer and never had a problem...

If it's an inch or two I wouldn't worry too much :) I think the most important thing is that it's consistent, if it's patchy (with deeper patches, and nice patches etc) it's more of a problem IMO. Just don't overdo it, your horse should be fine jumping in it every so often, but as with everything, in moderation.

An inch or 2, not to much

It may put more strain on their legs than jumping from a firmer surface because of having to counteract the give in the surface. However I personally can't see that there would be harm unless you do a lot of jumping and jumping in a school is certainly preferable to jumping on rock hard dry grass, which I've seen lots of kids do. Not that desperate then!

Okay thanks for that felixlight, JessandCharlie and nuttynugget. I will prob just go ahead and jump him then, its awful at my yard just now as the big indoor school is like concrete so refuse to ride in that full stop, the small indoor is patchy so only lunge in that as its fine in the middle so the only decent arena is the outdoor yet its a bit deep! Ahhh you just can get a yard that has no faults these days!!!
