Hi Guys, My new (ish) horse is in desperate need of a new bit. My friend rode him the other day & i've never seen him rode by someone else before (hence why i haven't noticed) but the bit almost gets pulled right through his mouth when you pull back or open out the reins. I'm imagining this is because he needs a bigger bit, but the one he's in now is a 6 1/2" and i'm struggling to find somewhere that sells bigger bits for me to try. Does anyone have any experience of trying to find large bits? He's a 16-3hh ISH, so not a huge draft horse or anything, just seems to have a big mouth! (or maybe there's another reason this happens, but i cant think of one?)

He's in a happy mouth, straight bar dutch gag at the moment although he's only ever rode on the snaffle ring so i really want him out of the gag. There's no point having it if he doesn't need it. Was hoping to try him in a loose ring french link this time & see how he goes.

You may find once you have a mouthpiece with a double link (like a french link or something with a lozenge or peanut) that the bit will be more stable in his mouth as it will sit more comfortably across his tongue- that in itself may be enough to stop it pulling sideways

Try using a pair of rubber biscuits, these are a good idea for gags anyway as they can pinch and it will stop the bit going through the mouth.

Or use a fulmer or full cheek and you will not have the problem of the bit slipping. It might be because you have the bit too low also.
