I dont know why i'm posting this, it's probably just to clear my mind. Here goes, I'm 5'7 and weigh 15 stone, i own a well built 15.2 sec D. I'm begining to worry that i'm to heavy for him, he loves to jog everywhere and he enjoys a good gallop. When i bought him i weighed 11 stone, but due to suffering from depression and being on medication, the weight has piled on. I worry about my boy carrying me, which upsets me because i don't want to hurt him, this depresses me even more. So the vicious circle continues. am i to heavy for him, please help me, but be gentle.

As long as he is reasonably fit and well, then you are fine hun. I'm 13st 10lb ish and ride Daughter1's 13.3hh cob - he carries me just fine (as says vet, back man, McTimonny bod, farrier, et al).

Just enjoy your horse hun.

you are fine - its been said many times before that some 12 stone peeps ride like a sack of spuds and this is worse for the horse, rather than a 15stone rider who rides well. I do know what you mean, I am 5ft 9 and 16stone, I ride a 16.2 clydesdale mare who has no problems at all, however I am losing weight and have lost a stone since september when I got her, aiming for 14stone!!

Hmm, well I'd say if he's still keen to go then he's not having any problems!

I have a 14.2hh who, although full up he's no heavy weight yet I was riding him when I was near enough 12 stone and he didn't seem to care less! I have since lost weight though as I didn't feel good myself. I feel a lot better now that I'm lighter.

I have lost about a stone and have to say I do think my horse seems to go better but that may be because I feel more energetic and lighter.

I wouldn't worry yourself about it too much. If you want to lose weight then do it. Most of us always want to shed some weight. Spring/summer is a good time to start but riding will also help so don't put off riding because you're worried about your horse. Welsh cobs are renowned for being able to carry a fair weight so he's probably not even noticed!

If I am completely honest, which I think is what everyone deserves, then I think that I wouldn't want to put anymore weight than that on him. It really does depend how you carry yourself, how well built he is etc.

I'm sorry if this wasn't what you wanted to hear and it is only my personal opinion.

My daughters 14.2hh irish cob used to carry a 6ft 15 stone man hunting all day in Ireland - he was obs fine as he always stayed up front!!

I wouldn't worry - go out and enjoy your riding - horses are great listeners and never judge!

Life is one big guilt trip for you at the mo, isn't it, sweetheart

He sounds as though he is more than capable of carrying you, so don't fret. Carry on riding him, enjoy it and keep taking the meds! Give it time and your perception of things will change for the positive

welsh's are strong little things, and if he is still jig jogging and up for it then I would say you are absolutely fine!
he would tell you if he was uncomfortable!
just enjoy him

I have a 15.2 hh Welsh D and I weigh 13 stone. I asked his physio if I was too heavy for him, and she said 'He could take you, me and the kitchen sink' and he isn't a particulary well built cob.

Don't beat yourself up about it. It sounds as though he is coping fine.

Thank you all for such lovely replies, you all nearly made me cry. It's nice to think that there are such caring people out there. It cheered me up, and i'll try not to worry about my boy. By the way Berkeley your picture made me laugh.
