Desp in need of some help/advice please!!
Does anybodys horse keep getting a bad back? Most sore point being behind the saddle on one side. He has very regular chiro visits but they are getting closer and closer together. Is chiro the right road to go down?
Also can anybody recommend a saddle that sensitive back horses go better in?
Any advice big or small will be gratefully received as am at wits end.

Horse does dressage if this helps.

I suggest you get a chiro to look at yourself. If the saddle is a correct fit and the horse chiro keep putting the horse right then its possibly you thats wrong.

My sisters mare does this..happened 6months apart, and is sort of behind the last rib?
No one can say why..

Thanks S, i go to a chiro myself monthly due to a pelvis problem but she says it's not me doing it

my friends horse was the same saddle fitted no other problems but all of a sudden started bucking had a phyiso and chiro out which he nearly killed! in the end he went to baldock vet surgery to have an injection in his back (cant remember the name on the joint it was put in) he had the summer out of work and a chance he maybe be on and off for the rest of his life but thank god hes as sound as a pound and hasnt bucked since!

Hi,
Without making you feel worse, if you have a pelvis problem it most definately will be causing or adding to your horse's back problem! Does your own Chiro actually ride herself to make the comment that it is not you causing the problem? I have ruptured ligaments in my knee which effects my leg very slightly and it causes my horse to go with his quarters in on the right rein! they feel absolutely everything, even if you feel slightly stiff after a training lesson the day before your horse will pick it up and mirror it. I would have a second opinion on your horse and yourself to help eliminate the causes.

I dont know what the problem may be. but if you get in touch with your local tack store. i reccomend a "gel pad" they will most likely know what your on about, they are made by "airbourne" and reduce the impact on the horses back, they go between the numnah, and the saddle, this shouldnt rub as the numnah is offering protection.

Just a suggestion

Stephen

Have you tried a different saddle altogether???? only ask as, I bought a 2nd hand saddle once that after a while rubbed on oneside, dispite being fitted by a saddler... he said it needed reflocking, turns out the tree was actuallyt slightly twisted

????? Also have you had your vet out for the problem and not just the chiro?

My horse kept getting a bad back - physio would help for a while but kept recurring. I was having my saddle checked regularly too.
I went down the vet route to make sure there was no underlying problem and he was then able to advise the best way to fix it. Touch wood, he's had no problems for a few months now.

hi , in my experience more so in the human world than the horsey one , ( i am a nurse ) physiotherapists and chiropractors cannot see inside a body , if me or my horse had a problem which was not resolving i would be looking for a vets advice and x rays to rule out any underlying anatomical problems

QR:

My mare keeps getting the same and I am wonky too, so we keep throwing each other out and there is a vicious circle! I use a McTimoney practitioner on both me and my horse, and am happy to give you her number if you like - she is also an instructor and a listed dressage judge - so has all bases covered. She will also watch you ride, to give you more insight as to whether it is you/horse that could be the route of the problem.

For what it is worth, and there are many other causes for these symptoms, my horse had a similar sore point on one side behind his saddle (well fitting, frequently checked saddle, and regular physio) coupled with worsening problems tracking up and engaging. Lameness work-up, scintigraphy and nerve blocks revealed no problems, but massive improvement on pain killers suggested the middle of the gullet was pinching his spine and he was crooked trying to avoid it. The only saddle he seems to like now is a treeless.

As I said, many things could be causing this problem, but I would get the vet out and start looking more thoroughly.

Some recurrent back problems can be due to the horse compensating for pain elsewhere like feet or joints. Has he ever shown signs of stiffness or lameness, especially soon after having his back problem corrected?

Also your saddle's not flair is it? These can go wrong and cause back problems but you can't really tell without having the saddle taken apart.

My saddle caused me similar problems, despite being checked by saddler, my instructor was convinced it wasn't right and it appears she was correct when it was checked by another saddler.

Don't know if you have ever considered it but I have been amazed by the Bowen treatment my pony has had. It appears to have had a much longer/greater effect than physio has. I can recommend someone in my area if you PM me.

Edited to say: I know my Bowen man travels so I'm sure he would come to your area

Well if your chiro thinks your saddle may be the problem - presumably you've had a saddler to look at it?????

Thumper came to me with a bad back - and I'm constantly checking it for signs of probs. He has regular treatment - and visits from the saddler (last night actually) - to ensure that the old problems to re-appear.

I wonder if your Chiro can recommend a saddler to you - one that they use. It's what mine has done, and working in partnership they are able to ensure that my lad is pain free and has a saddle fitted in the way that both my chiro and saddler are happy with.

Thankyou to you all, have booked a mctimony this morning to look at pony and me and me on pony! Also have had another saddler recommended so am going to get her out as well. Will see how this goes and go from there
