Not the best start to a New Year from me, had a terrible 2 weeks.
Just before Xmas we found a lump on my greyhounds jaw, swift turn around from the vets discovered squamous cell carcinoma, and a referal to Liverpool Leehurst. Unfortunately we went on holiday on the 21st, and he went rapidly down hill just prior, so a mad dash to Liverpool the day before holidays and he stayed their over xmas to have the lump and a section of jaw removed.
We returned from hols 29th so I went to pick him up Monday, where I found him in good spirits and really pleased to be home, seems fairly happy and eating, we have to wait to see if he'll need any more trreatment.
Tuesday morning found my 2 year old spotty dog desparately ill, bad tummy ache. I thought he'd eaten a stick or something, left him at the vets yesterday morning, to hear the devastating news he has some sort of kidney failure. I feel like someone has kicked me in the stomach. He's been my constant faithful companion for the last year and now I am not sure if he will last to tomorrow when we can go back to the vets. He is so poorly, I cant touch him as it obviously hurts and he cant get out of bed. I feel utterly helpless and cant believe what has happened :(
My beautiful pup: http://www.horseandhound.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?567682-Dog-food-help-please-for-new-boy!

Can I have a hug? (And a winning lottery ticket ?!)

So sorry, dreadful time for you, (((vibes ))) to your boys, and (((hugs))) for you, went through a similar time a year ago with my elderly German Shepherd, not being able to touch them to give comfort is devastating.

Hugs- My parents dog was diagnosed with kidney failure a month ago. Chronic type.

Is spotty dog not in vets on a drip? She was in for 5 days on a drip continuously to help flush everything through.
Hope he recovers and you get good news. And your greyhound continues to be well.

Thanks both.

He was on a drip yesterday but he had to come home because of the bank holiday, we are going back tomorrow. What is the prognosis for your parents dog? I have a feeling spots future isn't looking too bright, its so sad when he is so young :(

So sorry you are having such a rough time. Could you not find a 24 hour hospital to get your lad to, or even ask your vets if he could be put on a drip at home if they show you how to monitor it. I hope things improve for both your dogs.

Our Lab had kidney failure but when conventional medicine couldn't help, we took her to Chris Day, a homeopathic vet in Faringdon, Oxon. He spent an hour and a half talking with us and our dog, gave us some medication saying he couldn't cure the problem, but he could help the body to cope with it. We had an extra 2.5 years with her, and she enjoyed a good quality of life till her legs failed her on her last day...I can't explain how it works, I only know it did. Might be worth thinking about...

A terrible start to 2014 for you all, virtual hugs coming your way xxxx

Spotty is a bit perkier today, wasnt sure he'd make the night but the drip I guess has kicked in a bit. I would love to wave a wand to fix him, but I can't prolong his agony infinately, will have to make the best choice for him tomorrow, for today he is snuggled in front of the heater with hand fed chicken.

Tigger the greyhound is coping well, seriously worried that if he bangs his jaw something bad could happen, takes me ages to roll all his food into balls so he can eat! Spend far longer making the dogs food than my own!

Tigger!

What shocking news, I feel for you, I do hope both your dogs improve very quickly so you dont continue to worry.

As the others have said I would change my vets if they couldnt provide 24hour care, the fact you have him home is a comfort to you but also an added worry.

Both your dogs are gorgeous, so fingers crossed you get to have them for a long long time. xx

Oh you poor thing! How is the greyhound now? I too would be wanting spotty dog in the vets if he's in so much pain :(

Me too! My collie dog spent an entire bank holiday weekend in the vets when he ate a skewer - in fact they operated on the bank holiday Monday - cost me a fortune mind!

Hope your boys are feeling better now :)

I am now wondering why your collie ate a skewer BBH.....

I do hope your dogs improve soon OP, and another vote for changing vets to one which provides 24 hour care

Hope things are a little brighter this morning.

I can not believe a vet sending a very sick animal home just because it is a bank holiday. I would be changing my vets now.

If your other dog was at Liverpool (Leahurst) then why was Spotty not there.

there is an out of hours call out but they are apparently contract vets. I have no qualms of ringing them if he takes a turn. I do not really have another option, these are a mile away, next nearest vets are 1/2 hour away. I am not sure what else they could have done, his blood result will be back tomorrow.
I picked Tigger up from Leahurst on Monday, Spotty didn't turn until Monday night. Leahurst is 1 1/2 hours away too. What else am I going to do? In the space of 2 days I have spent more money in vets than the price of a nice horse, completely out of the blue, not mentioning the fact that it was Christmas, and I've been away ....

Sorry, mil1212, no one is having a go at you, we are all commiserating with your bad luck and hoping that both of your dogs are going to be fine.

However, I am surprised about the spotty dog being sent home. Does your normal vet practice not have an attached hospital, even a small one, in which animals can be kept in overnight and at weekend if they need treatment? It sounded from your post as though spotty dog was taken off the drip to come home purely because it was a bank holiday.

Round here, we have a choice of good mixed practices who have full out of hours emergency cover staffed by their own vets, who will if necessary admit inpatients or refer to Leahurst as appropriate.

Still trying to figure that one out myself! Also still (5 years later) have no idea where it came from as I don't keep things like that in the house (wooden skewer) :)

Sorry for late response.
Her out look is actually pretty good. Its chronic rather than acute although it came on in 5 hours so that's not what looked like til results came back.
She has to be managed carefully with low protein and phosphorus diet at present on hills renal diet as that is all she would eat. She is only 18months so agree its sad. She was so much better after the drip and they actually think she has had issue all her life but managed it herself until an infection or something set in which meant she couldn't regulate it herself.
Hope you get good results too.

That is really interesting dizzydancer, does sound similar to my boy, the vet and me agree that he was possibly born like it too, he has always drank alot and he smells funny, although the vet was incredibly pessimistic so I fear the worst, it also came on suddenly :(

TBH I'd be getting another opinion. A dog with kidney failure should be on a drip until bloods normalise-especially in a very young dog (although dalmations are prone to this). And I'd be finding myself a practice that had 24/7 staff so my sick dog didn't have to either come home (Which is ridiculous for them to do) or be moved to another practice to and fro. The place the contract vets work out of probably hs a normal day service as well and uses the ocntract vets for overnight care which is fine-I'd look into going there. I just hate to see people not getting good care.

My spotty dog is waiting on Rainbow bridge for me now, he was far too poorly, his blood test results no good, the drips made no difference.
Please don't tell me I didn't do all I could, I am very glad he came home and didn't spent his last night alone, the vets did as they could. He could have been on a drip for a week, been ok for a few weeks then we would have been back to square one, there was no way I could do that to him.
We had a dog before who had kidney failure and stayed at the vets, she never came home and had 2 nights in a solitary vet kennel :(

Sleep tight Hurley, I am sure you were the most (only?!) well behaved Dalmatian that ever lived, go herd some chickens in the sky x
