I'm absoultly gutted. I've just had a specialist to see my mare purely as a check up from when he saw her last September.

After seeing her lunged - where he could see nothing I rode her - just the normal of right hind not coming underneath her on the right rein. So as as check he ultrasounded her where we usually have issues - her lumbar/sacro joints - L7 and S1 have nearly completely fused.

I'm so devasted as it is now at the stage where nothing can be done. He's told me to treat her as normal and she should be able to manage half pass etc but I'm just going to have to take each day as it comes. It does explain why her simple changes on the right rein are so pants - but so unexpected last night she went amazingly and recently has been getting better and better each time I ride.

I'm sorry pointless post but everyones at work so can't really vent anywhere else.

Big sympathies and (((((HUGS)))))

I'm waiting for the vet to look at my big mare who has gone wrong AGAIN and I'm not expecting good news.

I am not at work, I have a slipped disc.

I know how you are feeling, but horse is not rideable due to arthritis in his feet, but I tell myself that at I am lucky to still have him.

Once the joint fuses, she will not be in pain and will be a bit stiff, but she should be rideable and keeping her fit will help her a lot. She may even surprise you.

Its horrible finding out something like this, I cried when I found out about Jake's arthritis.

The only thing I can say is that you are not alone - hugs-

Poor you

But at least you know what the problem is, and ca work around it as best you can - imagine the number of people who would think that their horse was simply lazy, and try and force them into something that was uncomfortable.

Is she a big horse? This is the problem with so many of these big warmbloods now, being backed at 2 1/2 and ridden hard, they don't have time to grow into themselves and strengthen up properly.

Thank you hb6. She's always had problems in the area but kissing spines have never ever been a possibitly. She has lots of other problems aswell, I don't ever seem to have any luck with horses.

I'm sorry your horse isn't rideable any more and you are very lucky to still have him. Unfortunatly J will not retire, she hates not being ridden for more than a week and becomes very dangerous. Where as my last horse was more than happy to live out her days pottering around the field just being a very pretty ornament.

A hb6 said your definitely not alone alot of us are having long term problems. All the best with your mare

She's only 16hh but is stupidly long in her back she wears 6ft9 rug. She had a fairly easy life before and mainly hacked. She's 3/4 TB (saddlers wells) 1/4 Dutch warmblood.

This is her (if it works)

She is lovely, I do not think a 6 9 rug is too big, my 16.3 has a 7 3 or 7 6 depending on the make!!

As I said, keeping her fit and active will benefit her. How old is she?

She can still have a happy working life and its good that you have found out what the problem is and can work her accordingly. As Zoe said somepeople wouldnt bother and think she is just lazy and just carry on hurting her.

I know how you feel - shocked and upset and can think of nothing else, but try to concentrate on the positive that you do whats best for her and she can still be ridden and have a good quality of life.

you got me worried now! My horse is lame, since Sunday. there is no heat, lump etc anywhere, he is not even sore in back. but nods in trot and on lunge in school is lame behind on the left rein but not on right?!

How did you horse look?

Know the feeling well! Sacroiliac probs are so frustrating arent they? I think you do have to take each day at a time and as you say, keep her working. This is definitely the best thing I have found for my mare. Two months ago my horse couldnt canter on the right rein. A year ago she was dangerous to ride!

Good luck with your horse. I think you just keep going but maybe have to just accept some limitations.

It's devastating when these kind of things happen, I do sympathise.

The vet normally gives the worst-case scenario, esp if asked how bad it could be/is.

You might find that once you have had time to digest this, found out a bit more about the condition and come up with a strategy for a way forward in terms of work/training, you may feel better.

My horse was diagnosed with spavin in RH soon after I bought him as a 4 yr old. Looking at the vet report I am pretty sure the sellers knew why he was dragging RH etc even though he passed vetting. Guess I was naive.

Anyway, I had bought him for high level showing and also dressage so I was devastated. For 8 yrs now he has been in regular work and able to do most of what I wish to do. I make some allowances for this condition. At the time he had a SI strain relating to the hock.

Don't see this as a total disaster. You can make things work for you I expect. Good luck.

hb6 - shes 14 so not old but getting on a bit now. Thank you I think she is fairly lovely.

Huntinghorse - she use to buck alot although in constant (consistent) work this is only occasionaly. She isn't lame but can't bring her right hind underneath her in canter at all.

I've had a bit of time now - she is sound completely so I'm now going to get on and do it for aslong as I can although I don't think I'll be jumping her again. I've just put some enteries in and we are going to do our first elementry music next month aslong as all ok. Now I know whats wrong I think in some ways it makes it all slightly easier and I can now make changes as required. I'm going to do a bute test on her tomorrow to see if that makes a difference or not. If it does at least I'll know I have something to fall back on if she is uncomfortable at any stage.

Thanks for the support it is very much appreciated xx

Hi, can i ask what the actual problem is then??? Im having issues with my mare which the vet just doesnt know what it is...we put it down to a spavin forming her her hind around March time, treated that with tildren and she came sound. She is now not right again and the vet said its not a lamness as such, looks more of a discomfort when ridden and also not tracking up on right hind.....

Have back person coming out AGAIN tues and have taken her shoes of incase its her feet...we just dont know??
