can anybody suggest some good exercise to develop muscle behind the saddle on my ex racehorse. he has been out of training for a couple of years and has got a lovely neck but he has still got a 'pointy' bum. he works properly and does lots of long and low work but just behind the saddle there is still a little dip. it might be a bit conformation but there is definitly room for improvement.

line of 5 raised trotting poles(a block or bucket raising alternate ends of the poles to make them a bit higher so horse has to strech down and lift his legs up higher), just go over them randomly while schooling or put 3 in a fan shape and trot over them on the lunge

mine has exactly the same thing, he is quite weak behind his saddle, he is in lunge work at the mo and has done trotting poles the last two days.

my ex racer irish TB used to have a REALLY pointy bum. but i just did lots of hillwork on hacks which built up his back end, i would also suggest maybe lunging in a pessoa to bring hind quarters into proper use, and raised trotting poles

tbh just lots of schooling and hacking and it should gradually disappear! i didnt do anything major towards getting rid of Dani's pointy bum, but after a while of hacking and schooling its pretty much completley gone!

thank you everyone..... its nice just having the hope that it will disappear.

i'll try the raised trotting poles. i'll let you know how many times he trips over!!

all thats said above, but make sure he is getting enough feed to help him build up the muscle. Also make sure there is enough room in his saddle and there are no pressure points in the areas of no muscle.

Bring on the spring grass!

he does get lots of food but, yes the spring grass works wonders

i thought i might try build and glow....has anybody tried it?
